Charlie Manuel didn't say much about his decision to bench Jimmy Rollins in the top of the fifth inning after the MVP shortstop jogged out a fly ball that ended up being dropped by Reds shortstop Paul Janish. But Rollins accepted responsibility afterwards, and said there was no ill-will between he and his manager.

"It's my fault. I can't get mad at him," Rollins said. "That's like breaking the law and getting mad that the police show up."

Rollins was batting with two out in the third when he popped a ball up to shallow left field. Janish ran back to make the catch, but the ball popped out of his glove, allowing Carlos Ruiz to score from second.

"There is no explanation," Rollins said. "I just didn't do it. It happens every once in awhile. Sometimes your manager gets you."

good job charlie! sending a message to everybody , no matter who you are, you gotta hustle and bust it all the time. hustling out fly balls is the difference between winning the world series and being just all right.

ummm.... Between him and his manager (not "he") objective case pronoun, him, following the preposition "between"....a common mistake (increasingly so) when people "over-correct" the typical errors like ...."him and me went shoppping"....which correctly would be "he and I"....or something like: Bill and I drove to the shore and the weather was too hot for he and I (should be "for...him and me"...again, object of preposition) AN EASY WAY to check and find the correct usage is to do a test-sentence, eliminating the (other) pronoun, to see which sounds right: "too hot for ME"..... "I drove to the shore"....not "me drove to the shoe" --in most areas, at least......

DLC48: Kudos to FasterEddie, actually....So many people (allegedly educated and otherwise) butcher the English language these days that it's refreshing when someone speaks up. If you're not one of them, then just ignore it. If you are, then maybe you'll learn something. Isn't that why we read? But you know the earnest plea: "If we can reach one, just ONE person...."

Correcting a poster's English is a fruitless task, but this guy is supposed to be a writer. People like Andy Katz at ESPN can't even tell "its" from "it's". "It's" is a contraction of "it is"; "its" is a possessive pronoun. "i.e." would be used to explain something more fully - it is also frequently used to hide bade writing. BTW, that arrreviation does not mean "for example" as it is frequently misused. "i.e." is an abbreviation for the Latin "id est" - "that is." The correct latin abbreviation for "for example" is "e.g.", which stands for (if I can remember all the way back to the Latin I studied more than 50 years ago) "exemplia gratia" - "for the sake of an example." Best rule: don't use any foreign language abbreviation unless you know the underlying words and their real meaning. Use like or such as instead of the Latin.

I suspect this is not JRoll's 1st offense--I didn't care for the smirk he had on his face as he sat in the dugout after being lifted--He is this years MVP and needs to set a better example for the younger players

@ Faster Eddie - He has benched Howard for his performance this year. As far as the N.L. MVP he has not produced this entire homestand. Absolutely bench him for a reality check! Jimmy needs to come off of cloud nine and start playing baseball again !! phanatic74.wordpress.com

I've noticed a different Rollins this year. Seems like he is still on cloud nine from last year. (Laughing in the Dugout after committing outs, waiting till the last minute to first on ground balls). He deserved to get benched.

Am I missing something here? Rollins accepted responsibility, Manuel cut it of be saying it was between him(or he) and his player. End of story. In my mind J-Roll just went from MVP to a role model. He didn't turn it into a Reggie Jackson-Billy Martin type incident or a "pop up to short, we talkin' 'bout a pop up to short" A.I. tirade. And davegas there is a difference between a mental mistake and not hustling - hustle can sometimes make up for your mistakes.

The managers and players reaction to yesterday's incident and it is one of the most positive and encouraging things I've seen in baseball in years. Jimmy should be applauded the next time he takes the field for understand his role and responsiblity to the team. Charlie showed that he shows no favorites and that even the MVP is not above the rules.

It worked out fine for all sides. Once in a while the players need to be shown as a group who is in charge, even if it means losing 1 game in a 162 season. (Which they actaully won) No harm, no foul.
