Ankle bothered Phillies; Phillies bothered Reyes

POSTED: Wednesday, February 18, 2009, 1:33 PM

My apologies for not blogging until now. Hope the coverage in the paper held you over. Jimmy Rollins just addressed the media for the first time since spring training and admitted that the ankle he sprained early in the season bothered him throughout the year, even into the playoffs.

"The ankle really probably didn't stop bothering me until December," Rollins said. "(I would) do a couple things, then you hear it pop a couple times, and you are like, 'Oooh,' But it was the scar tissue tearing, and it's something that needed to be happening. Coming into the playoffs, there were a couple of times that I was on first base and I was talking to Prince [Fielder] and I was like, 'Man it feels like my Achilles is going to go.' But it's going to have to blow for me to come out this game. It finally loosened up, so it feels good now.'"

I'm sure by now you've read Jose Reyes' comments to New York reporters at Mets camp in Port St. Lucie. Specifically, he took umbrage with the Phillies' suggestion that Reyes "pimps" his home runs too much. Last year, some merry Phillie pranksters jokingly put Reyes' name above Victorino's locker after he hit a home run and pumped his fist.

"I heard that," Reyes said, as reported by the New York Post. "I don’t know why they said that because I’m not the only when I hit a home run that I ‘pimp’ it. A lot of people do that. A lot of people from Philadelphia too. They stand there for a couple seconds and nobody say nothing. I don’t know why the Phillies focus so much on the New York Mets. We just worry about us.

"I don’t know why they always focus on us. They are the ones to win the World Series. We don’t say nothing about them. We just say congratulations to the Phillies. They always say something about us and we don’t even focus on them. We focus on them when we play against them.

"We don’t worry about the Phillies – we focus about the New York Mets," Reyes said. "They have to be happy because they win the World Series. Why do they focus on us? What did we do to them? If they don’t like us, that’s OK."

"We just worry about us." That statement is demonstrably untrue. Thanks, by the way, to the Mets beat writers for helping keep the team psyched out about Philadelphia.

Reyes can be a phenomenal player when he's 'on', but man does he come up small when his team needs him the most.

I hate Reyes and I hate the Mets. Part of the reason this keeps coming up is because their loudmouth fans keep saying that the Mets are the most talented team in the NL East.

Didn't Rodriguez just say that they're the team to beat, not the Philies. The problem with Reyes is that he doesn't understand that when the national media makes you out to be the second coming and you don't play up to that when it counts, that you're going to draw attention. Either step up or deal with it.

"Part of the reason this keeps coming up is because their loudmouth fans keep saying that the Mets are the most talented team in the NL East." If they're not, then have they really choked the past couple years? The Mets might have more talent, but the Phils are the better team (as in, 25 guys playing together). At least, that's how I view that distinction.

The Mets and Phillies shouldn't like each other, they are the biggest obstacle to winning the NL East. So they should talk about each other.

Reyes could pass as a black Frankenstein. Put the pics side by side, separated at birth, one green, the other black, even though he's spanish. He is a helluva player though, but that special something is missing from his game, and most of the Puerto Rico Mets game, er, I mean NY Pets.

"We don’t worry about the Phillies – we focus about the New York Mets," Maybe you should worry about the Phillies more they are the best team in your division. P.S. Reyes - you single handedly lost the penant for your team two yrs ago with your slump down the stretch. We here in Philly appreciate it.

When you're the World Champions, you can say anything you want whenever you want. When you fail to even make the post season by choking in the last week (two years in a row), you should just shut your trap!...Mr. Reyes.

The only reason there is even a hint of bad blood on either side is because for the first time in a while, we are both GOOD ballclubs at the same time, starting 3 seasons ago. Pretty soon we'll have to start hating the braves again! And didn't the Nats pick up a couple of good players this off-season? (Oh great, here comes that old paranoia again.)

"f- the Mets, f- the Mets" was heard ringing through the streets after the WS victory. Pretty sure you'd hear no mention of the Phillies during a Mets fan celebration. The Mets hate the Yankees because the Mets are historically inferior. The Phillies just hate that so many Mets fans show up to the series and travel well. In short, nobody in NY cares about Philadelphia, but Philadelphia can't stop talking about the Mets even when they WIN! Just enjoy the victory. You were the better team.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that when the guy hits a home run they celebrate in the dug out as much as the Phils did after winning the World Series. I'm half expecting them to pull out champagne and start spraying each other after each run they score.....and it seems to rub off on their obnoxious fans too!

It is called motivation Reyes. The Phillies used the motivation to beat the Mets the last 2 years. So it worked. Hmmm, Reyes said the Mets do not do that and they have lost twice. So he wants to repeat the methods that have lost and laughs at the methods that win. Ooookay, that makes sense!

The article leaves out the Reyes comment on Hamels calling the mets "choke artists". Check your facts Jose. Hamels didn't initate the talk of the Mets. the Ny radio guys did. Also, F-rod just this week proclaimed the mets the team to beat. Unless they win the WS, they can't do better than the Phils.

Are like inbred what? You either need a noun to go with that adjective or drop the "like" in order to make that a coherent sentence. Also, ny.6, if you run your mouth like that down in Philadelphia you will leave with a smile similar to that of Jimmy Rollins. Typical New York trash. Or most likely North Jersey trash.

I understand Reyes. HR's are a lot more special when your team has fewer of them. Phils hit 42 more HR's in the regular season than the Mets. Forty-two. Guess it is cause for celebration when you dont have that many, huh Jose? Another interesting stat: Mets had nearly 100 more at-bats in which to make those HR's (had 83 more hits than the Phils).

A lot of you are taking shots at Reyes' and his lack of command of the english language... Well, the guy taught himself english and although he is obviously not fluent, he can still communicate to the point where he can be understood with no problem. How many of you could teach yourself a second language and be able to hold a conversation in it?
