Reports: Phillies pursue Aramis Ramirez, look to deal Polanco

Following a report from the Palm Beach Post earlier today that the Phillies are "strong players" for free-agent third baseman Aramis Ramirez comes a report that the Phillies are actively shopping Placido Polanco.

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Phillies are looking to move Polanco, according to rival general managers, in order to make room for Ramirez.

Ramirez, 33, just finished a 5-year $75 million contract with the Cubs. He made $14.6 million in 2011, but declined a mutual option for $16 million to remain with the team and became a free agent. The Angels were reported last week to be a strong suitor.

Ramirez' line in 2011 was .306/.361/.510 with 26 home runs and 93 RBI in 149 games.

Polanco, 35, hit .277 with five homers and 50 RBI in 122 games last season but was hampered by injuries after a strong start. He has sports hernia surgery in the offseason.

A real honest to God .300 hitter with power who drives in runs...what a concept.

Okay - I'll bite. This isn't the stone ages anymore, stop looking at batting average. If you are going to look at his batting average, at least look it up. Ramirez has a .284 career avg.

NOthing to really like about this signing if it weakens the defense and costs major $$. I'd pass and take my chances with Polanco and a possible platoon at 3B. Not sure what Amaro is doing here.. maybe a smoke screen for something else? Questionable decision making...

Aramis doesn't strike out 100+ times a year...not sure how he'll fit in with this team.

polanco was the best hitter on the team until pence got here. ramirez is horrible in the field - polanco is exceptional. i think the concerns about polanco's injuries are overblown.. we will regret kicking polanco to the curb if this is how it is going to play out. polanco has a few more good years left.

Would love to see them get someone like Rmirez. Wouldn't it be great if they bump Howard to say, the number 5 spot?

can shop Polanco all they want --they'll get as much as for him as they were offered when they "shopped" Blanton, and as much as they would have been offered for Ibanez last year or for Howard over next 5 years --bad contracts have zero value to anyone but the rube who signs them

Small pet peeve, why mention Poly's age (35) and not Ramirez's (33)?

    What are you talking about?
