The Phillies have given permission to the St. Louis Cardinals to interview Ryne Sandberg for their vacant managerial position, according to ESPN.com.

Tony La Russa retired after winning the World Series for the Cardinals.

The Cubs have an opening, too, at manager after Mike Quade was told he would not be rehired. The Cubs reportedly told Sandberg they wanted someone with big-league managerial experience. Sandberg was a Hall of Fame second baseman for the Cubs.

Sandberg managed the Phillies' Triple A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, last season.
