Report: Pence deal to Giants 'in place'

POSTED: Monday, July 30, 2012, 7:54 AM

Which players should the Phillies deal before Tuesday's 4 p.m. trade deadline?
Juan Pierre
Jonathan Papelbon
Hunter Pence
Cliff Lee
Shane Victorino
Ty Wigginton
Joe Blanton
Jimmy Rollins
Placido Polanco
Laynce Nix
Chase Utley
Keep the players. Get rid of Manuel or Amaro!

KPIX, a  television station in San Francisco, is reporting that the Giants "have a deal in place" for Phillies outfielder Hunter Pence. Giants vice president Bobby Evans reportedly denied the report in a text message, saying that there's "no truth to the rumor."

But sources tell Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com that, although no agreeement has been reached, the Giants and the Phillies are indeed discussing a deal.

Pence, 30, is hitting .268 with 17 home runs and 59 RBI. Should there be a trade, the Phillies could bring up Domonic Brown from the minor leagues.

The Phillies are expected to become sellers after a weekend sweep at the hands of the Atlanta Braves effectively eliminated them from playoff contention. The MLB trade deadline is 4 p.m. Tuesday.

good moves. investing a possible 15 million in pence is obviously not a good move. you had to get rid of him. resigning vic wouldn't be smart either.

Many people are saying that we depleted our farm system. Nobody that we traded is an All-Star or even close, except for maybe Michael Bourn, who we may get back this offseason. The trades were the right things to do but, like the NBA, bad contracts kill you. That plus the fact that the rest of the league figured out that the Phillies can't hit anything but fast balls so the run is over.

Trading Pence would be INSANE! He's a solid #5 hitter which the team has been missing since Werth and Ibanez left. He's leading the team in HR and RBI's. Guys that consistently hit 25 HRS with 90 RBIs a year are not easy to find. Is he perfect, no. Is his bat easily replacable, no. With all the Phillies hitting woes it would be stupid to trade one of the few productive hitters they have.

This team is unwatchable...the players are going though the motions and don't seem bothered by losing. The big contracts have seemingly ushered in massive amounts of complacency. The players re to blame, not he manager or GM. Need to clean house.

The Phils don't have to trade Pence now, especially if they are not getting anything significant in return. Osich has long-term but not immediate potential and Joseph is not an upgrade over Valle. Even Osich and back-up catcher Hector Sanchez would not be enough for Pence. There are many teams that will sell the farm to get Pence this off-season, so what's the rush to get rid of the guy who is currently leading the Phils in RBIs? A better deal would be with the Padres - Pence for Headley and Street. Another rumor is Blanton to the Orioles for infielder Schoop. That's not a fair trade either. The deal would be better if it were Blanton and Pierre for Machado. The Phils are concerned about 3 players who will become free agents after this season - Blanton, Pierre and Victorino. They have no reason to give away any other players for little to nothing in return. The Phils are going nowhere this year. They can be retooled in the off-season. In the meantime, the Phils should get what they can for Blanton and Pierre and trade Victorino only if they can't first extend him with a hometown discount in place or get an above average deal for him.

in a surpise move, Ruben Amaro, Jr. announced that the Philllies have traded Cliff Lee, Hunter Pence, Shane Victorino, and Carlos Ruiz to the Tampa Bay Rays for infielder Jhonnathan Teran, currently batting .226 with 1 hr and 6 rbis in 48 games in the Venzuelan Summer League. In addition, the Phillies agreed to pay the remainder of the traded players' contracts through the end of this season and next. Mr. Amaro explained that, although Teran was not necessarily as promising a prospect as the Phillies had hoped for, the Phillies did not want to be caught short and left with nothing, and accordingly when he called the Rays and asked whom they wanted to give in exchange, he felt that it was worth it for the Phillies to acquire the warm body offered. "We're not the Yankees," Amaro explained, "and we need to get younger and replenish the depth in our minor league system."

if what's being reported is true and the trade stays as is that is horrible. Why do the Phils need another catcher?? they better turn around and trade that catching prospect for a major league ready third baseman or RAJ has some splainin to do..horrible.

Trade Howard if you can get anyone to take him? Just look at their record since he signed the big contract. He is overweight and he can`t even catch the ball when they throw it to him. As far as anyone else to trade, yea everyone except Chooch,Hamels and Blanton. Don`t forget about the hitting and pitching coaches too. They can`t hit and the bullpen is terrible.

Would the Giants take Papelbon for some good prospects? Crazy beard guy Wilson is hurt and I don't know if they have a full time closer that they are happy with but I would do that if the Giants are so inclined.

Pence has been the second best starter on the Phils this year -- only Ruiz has been better. He actually sometimes does hit in the clutch, and look at the outfield assist he has.

Why don't the Phillies just trade Dominick Brown to the Giants? I wouldn't trade Pence. In my opinion the most expendable Phillies are Wigginton, Mayberry and Howard. None of these players can hit for average or play the field. Did you see the game yesterday? Blanton yesterday field a bunt and fired a perfect strike to Howard and he didn't catch the ball. Howard must be on drugs or something. Last week against the Giants Howard rushed and fielded a bunt with the bases loaded and didn't have the presence of mind to get the force out at home. Both of these outs would have been the 3rd out. The pitchers have figured out Howard. He is a 240 hitter against right handed pitchers and a 120 hitter against lefties. The Phillies don't need Howard.

I don't see the Rangers giving up both Olt and Martin. Maybe I'm wrong. One scenario out there is Pence to SF for prospects, prospects to SD for Chase Headley. There's probably a major leaguer in with those prospects somewhere if that happens. If they could pull that off then Lee can stay and maybe they even resign Victorino. That fits with a front office mentality of not rebuilding but just retooling for 2013. I'm not saying I agree with that but it fits. One reason I see them wanting to hang on to Lee is that they will trade Blanton or at least not resign him. I think with a "we're still in it" mentality they don't give up two starters.

It's tempting to trade more than half of the squad: Pierre, Pence, Victorino, Rollins, Nyx, Wigginton, Mayberry, Polanco. The problem is: many of these players have little or no worth left in tank. Rollins? Good luck getting rid of him. Victorino is doable and his value is probably increasing a tad. Mayberry, Polanco: no value left. Blanton probably will get traded. He's pitching well enough to command some value. Of course, that leaves a huge whole in the rotation. If you throw in Lee, then the prospects for a 100 loss season look pretty good.

If they trade Lee (say to Texas for Olt and Martin) then the rotation for next year is Halladay, Hamels, Worley, Cloyd and Martin. Say they sign Bourn/Cabrera/Upton for $15 mil a year (might be a low figure), but that is probably what Pence is going to get in arbitration. So now by trading Pence, you have an OF of Brown, Bourn/Cabrera/Upton, and Mayberry. An IF of Olt, Rollins, Utley, Howard and Ruiz behind the plate. Fill in the bullpen with minimum salary guys (Stutes, DeFratus and the like) and bench of Nix, Galvis and three others (Say average of $2 mil a piece), and you are looking at a payroll of $140 mil for next year or so.
It remains to be seen if that team is better than the one we have now, but it is a way to start the process of getting younger and then after next season you can figure out a solution at Pitcher and 2B with Halladay and Utley coming off the books.
The million dollar questions with all of this talk is if Halladay is healthy (or will be for 2013) and if the fans will come out to the park again with the team mentioned above next season.

@only9 is correct about Rollins. Even if the Phillies wanted to trade him and had a taker Rollins can say "no" to any trade due to playing 10 years and playing 5 with the Phillies. I don't see Rollins okaying any trade. Maybe there's a remote shot of him approving a trade to the Bay area (his hometown) but that really limits the potential players.

Pierre has a possibility of being trades. Reports have some teams asking about him. I don't think he brings much in return but if he brings anything, the Phillies will probably make that trade.

Reports are also saying it's possible to move Blanton and that Lee is in play. We'll see how much of that is pure fantasy soon enough. I think there's a decent chance of a Lee trade and I think Blanton, like Pierre, is gone if the Phillies can get anything at all in return.

It's easy to see who grew up in the fantasy league era. The proposed trades you a**holes suggest are deals that even the most drugged of GM's wouldn't make. Trade Howard, Rollins, Mayberry, Pierre..... These people would get you nothing or have salaries that nobody else would even come close to paying. They're all on down years, so we should dump salary, right. Not the NFL, idiots, where you cut a guy and owe him nothing. And why would you only get prospects for Lee? He is under contract for a couple years yet, so you get major leaguer for major leaguer. You people are as stupid as Cholly and Rube for getting us into this mess.

If this is the case, it may be a smart, practical move. Pence game has several non-championship caliber holes. His value is magnified by the marginal performers around him. Love Pence's enthusiasm and apparent team approach...but unwise to rebuild a top notch core around him. Let's just hope that the returns in personnel are not addition by subtraction. Projected money that Pence will command is no doubt a factor, but Phils need to obtain meaningful personnel value asap.

I agree trade Howard. He is light years worse than Pence. He is feast or famine, leaning heavily towards famine. I'd rather have a clean up hitter that cleans up and not always looking for the big-fly. It would take a lot of money off the books, could get a third baseman and the void at first could be filled with lots of the bench guys for the rest of this year.

Howard isn't going to get better over time. Pence, he is bound to recover. Obviously he has worth if teams are after him.

I really thought the original Pence deal was a schizophrenic one. It seemed like they were looking for a key piece to put them over the top, but went after Pence because they could control him (and over pay him thanks to arbitration) for two more years. The problem is, the only guy that could effectively be the key piece in a tough situation out there was Beltran. Because of his undisciplined approach, Pence is an easy out in key situations. Imagine being a strong pitcher and the heart of the opposition line up is Howard 'protected' by Pence. You know those guys will swing at anything under duress. Anyone remember Carpenter in what should have been a tight, pressure packed, game 5 laughing at Howard for chasing his garbage? That said it all.

Really that about sums up Pence: He hits very well as an individual but he doesn't necessarily help your lineup as a whole. His fielding was also worse than I expected this year. He's a good player but when you see a guy like Ryan Braun not making over 10m until 2015 you have to consider the cost/benfit. The biggest issue with trading him is getting another solid RH bat in the lineup.

I am not saying that I would keep Polanco for next year. I was just saying that it is one option they could do. I would prefer to get a young 3B prospect in here like Olt.
However, I'm still not 100% sold on trading Lee though. If Halladay is hurt next year (or if he leaves after 2013) and Lee is gone, you are looking at a rotation of Hamels, Worley, Kendrick, Cloyd and May/Pettibone/minor league pitcher. I would much rather take my chances with keeping Lee and using Lee and Hamels as the top two starters in 2014 with Worley and some of the baby aces mixed in.

You have to look at Lee's age. He'll be 34 in a month. The chances of him living up to his contract in 2016 at the age of 37-38 are not good. Trading either Lee or Halladay at this point in their careers is not a huge loss (my opinion). The real goal for both of those guys was to have them help win another WS within a window that is now all but shut. Perhaps with some retooling it's open on a very very tiny crack next year but those are not odds you put 25m a year on.

Pence's defense has been bad this year, but offensively he's on pace for 27 HR and 95 RBIs despite having no one other than Chooch in this line up for most of the year. Who's gonna play RF next year...Dom Brown? LOL great another LF bat with less power and who by the way can't stay healthy and looks even more lost in the field sometimes.

People they won't go after Bourn unless they trade Willie Mays Hayes because he'll pout if he's not hitting leadoff. They'd have to offer Victorino $12M as a qualifying offer if you want to keep him in CF. If WMH and Victorino are worth $12M-ish a year, Pence is certainly worth $15M.

For those who want Brown sent to Siberia, he will get a shot this year now. That makes sense. This is his chance to show he's ready for the big leagues and they have to let that play out. They've invested too much in the guy. Depending on who they trade, Brown may get to play an outfield position he's more comfortable with. I think Brown can definitely hit. His fielding and time on the DL concern me. But he's not staying in the minors if the Phillies are moving guys out.

S, agree, they need to address 3B for next season via trade (Olt being the best choice). My point is they need more than Joseph, maybe their best young OF and one top pitching prospect. I heard before Valle could be move to 3B or OF. I don't think he's as good defensively as Joseph. And Joseph has shown big time power for a young kid.

I like Joseph over Valle for sure. The Giants have Panik who's a highly ranked SS many project to play 2B. That would be insurance for 2014 when Utley's contract is up. I don't see the Giants giving up Panik for Pence though. Maybe a guy like Schierholtz is included or something.

Speaking of switching positions I read that the Phillies have been trying Ruf in the outfield. He's been hitting well. If he can play somewhere other than 1B maybe he can get a shot next year or in 2014.

I feel like the Phillies could make Victorino an offer if they trade Pence. I could see Shane signing for a discount after the year he's had. I have mixed feelings about that scenario.

Pence does make mental mistakes, but I love how everyone acts like the guy was amazing and now is horrible. He is on pace for the best power numbers of his career. Also, the guy is currently batting .271 and is a career .290 hitter. These aren't horrible numbers, especially with a HRs in the upper 20s and over 90s RBIs, which he likely will have at season's end. People are ridiculous. He's a good player, and if JRoll is worth 10 to 12 mil, Pence is certianly worth 15. Especially with the other hitters on this team.

They have to figure out the solution at 3B as the OF free agent market has more players so they can address the OF by a free agent. It appears to me that they have three options in regards to 3B, keep Polanco for next year, bring up someone from the minors (Asche), or trade for a young 3B (like Olt). Maybe they trade Lee for a package of Olt and others, maybe they don't, maybe Texas won't do that. I believe that they have to keep Lee. Next season could be Halladay's last so they will need Lee for 2014 to go with Hamels and the young kids (Worley, Cloyd, May, Pettibone, etc).
Yes, the phillies have a lot of payroll tied up for 2013 already. Yes, this means that they will have to rely on a lot of minimum salary guys (Worley, Cloyd as starters, Schwimmer, Stutes, DeFratus, etc in the bullpen) to fill out the roster for next year.
Another thing to consider is if the OF in 2013 would be better with Mayberry, Brown and Pence, or Mayberry, Bourn, Brown. You could substitute another FA center fielder in there (Upton, Cabrera) but the point is the same they need to figure out if they would rather have a FA center fielder or stick with Pence. Another point to trading Pence is that his cap hit of probably around $4 mil for the rest of the season would help tremendously in getting under the luxury tax for this year so they could go over it in 2013.

There's no way they should keep Polanco. Even as a bench player he's too old and too injury prone. I don't see Asche coming up next year. Lee might get them Olt. If so, you have to listen to that deal no matter how you feel about Lee. They can cut payroll pretty easily. Just getting Polanco, Blanton, Victorino or Pence and Contreras off the books frees up a decent amount of money. The bigger problem is they have a lot of guys locked in to contracts (for example the whole infield other than 3B) which limits the changes they can make without trading. They could try moving a guy to 3B but that seems like a long shot to succeed. The FA market is often overpaid and too old. Trades and a good farm system are the way to get younger. So for the Phillies it's trades.

Of all the deals the Phils made the past few years, the biggest loss of prospects may end up being the Pence deal, especially now considering the return on that trade. Hopefully, they end up with a couple top prospects in a deal for Pence.
Romus has some great ideas but not sure if they can get both of those guys for Pence but that would be a best case scenario for the team, including Lee for Olt.

Say what you want about Pence and all the hitters, but the big pitching rotation is what killed us this year. They let us down big time! We would be right in this thing if our supposed aces held their own.

Pence has issues with his madman swing but you can count on him to be on the field everyday. Unlike Polanco, Rollins, Howard and Utley. Howard absolutely must go to the AL as a DH and Utley too if he can't play a full season in the field. Utley would make a great part time player and DH on rest days. He has American League value.

Realistically no one wants Halladay, Howard, Utley, Papelbon, Rollins, Lee or Hamels at the prices they are being paid...who else are we supposed to trade again? That is 125 million locked up for next year already. The pitchers might bounce back, but the hitters are aging and shot. Well played Bobo the talking basset hound.

Well it is that time of year all the talk about who is going and who is coming... Well if they trade Hunter and do not get at least what they traded to get him in value than we really got screwed over all. Blanton, Victorino, Pierrce out of the three get a relief pitcher who is stable and will help out for a few years. Also sorry but Iwould move Utely tio the AL there has to be a team that could use a part time 2nd baseman DH. Heck if you can get rid of Howard then I would dot hat too. the amount of $$ saved would allow this team to rebuild quicly and with good players. So nowwe wait and see if we get anything good in any trades we make shame Ed Wade isn't a GM some place....lol

I would gut the whole outfield for 2013. I love Hunter Pence's effort, but he has been far from reliable in right field. You could probably live with his outfield blunders and bad hitting approach if Utley and Howard were in their primes. Shane Victorino gave the Phillies some great years. He has done a great deal of charity work for the city, as well. But for some reason, he has been a shell of his former self in 2012. Maybe no extension from Amaro? Victorino has had a pretty good stretch here of late going, with the bat. John Mayberry Jr. is a player that many Phillies fans had hoped, was closer to the abilities of Jayson Werth rather than Ben Francisco. Mayberry is a fringe AAA/MLB ball player. His lack of desire is puzzling. Amaro and Manuel promised the fans new found patience at the plate for this season. It turns out that you can't teach old dogs(Rollins, Victorino, Pence) new tricks.

Pence was a good piece to add last year, when our aces were actually pitching like aces and our offense was woeful. He made a difference. This year, his offense has been pretty good but he obviously has flaws in the field. So, I'm with the post-ers who say his arbitration salary for 2013 is too high. We could bring in a Cody Ross type for probably half what Pence would get.

PaulSoTex, the Phillies need to get young players, not Michael Young. He's 35 years old making $16 millions a year. He has another year in his contract. He's also having his worst year since 2002, hitting .269 with 3 HR and an OPS under .700. He has split most of his game between DH (43) and 1B (32).

Trade J-Stroll first. Then we can get rid of Wiggy, Vic, Kratz, Polanco and Blanton.

The latest weasel words by sports reporters are that a team has a "deal in place" to trade somebody. That locution allows the person who reported the deal to back down gracefully -- "hey, I didn't say the deal was DONE" -- if necessary. Case in point: so-called insiders said there was a "deal in place" for Ryan Dempster to go to Atlanta last week. He didn't.

a $180 million dollar payroll and this is what we fans get for it???these overpaid bozos should rebate part of their salaries in recognition of the dismal performance they put forth this year...utterly and totally disgraceful...trade anybody who can we get value in return..i guess only papelbon and hamels are untouchable now...and lay off ruben and cholly...the blame for this miserable year lies squarely and solely on the shoulders of the players...they have underperformed spectacularly and last i heard ruben and cholly weren't playing...repeat after me...180 million,180 million..ad nauseam..good luck to comcast and ch.17 in trying to attract viewers for the rest of this forgettable season..

Pence is a good player we all agree. This move would not be about cleaning house. Freeing up his 15mil next year would allow the Phils to address almost both OF spots with that money. Thats what this move is about.

They are talking about catcher Tommy Joseph, who just turned 21 two weeks ago. He's playing at AA. He hit 22 hr with 90 RBI at high A last year. He was the starting catcher for USA in the Futures games and had a pretty good game both with the bat and defensively. No question he's a legit prospect. However, I think they need another blue chip prospect to justify giving Singleton, Cosart and Santana to acquire Hunter last year.

It would definitely take more than Joseph. Also, while Joseph is good, at times he's not ranked much above Valle. I'd rather see infielders and outfielders picked up. Maybe the Phillies are trying to get a guy like 3B Gillaspie in the deal?

Pence's RH bat would be missed. His fielding can be upgraded though and he's most likely going to get over 14m in arbitration next year which is why you'd move him now. They could probably sign Victorino long term for less money if they wanted to.

Joseph? He mostly plays first, has so-so power, is this some cruel joke? How does this do anything to help us, short or long term? Josh Osich? He's going to be 25, had Tommy John..sheesh, we got robbed, I wouldn't take these two for Blanton, maybe Polance, maybe..what a joke

Why don't you and all the other FWF's go root for the Nats or Mets, which you probably do already. Pence is a great player, like many others on the club. If you knew anything about baseball, which obviously you do not, then you would know it's a systemic failure within the whole lineup. The team has no focus or motivation. There are no hitters except Ruiz to protect the other players in the lineup. I am proud of this team, Rube and Cholly and the rest, they built a winning team and have a strong organization. Winning brings in revenue, we now have a payroll and teams with payroll contend, have an off year or two then contend. Like I'm surprised that the few FWF's who always whine and moan no matter what are here gloating saying "I told you so" If it was so easy to win a WS every year there would be 30 teams contending every year. You and the other FWF morons would rather see this team fail every year just so you can say how you were right about something. You don't deserve this team. Thanks Phillies!!!

He was a damn good player, that is why we gave up so much for him. All of a sudden he gets the phillies can't hit the ball to save my life curse? Seems like the whole team has suffered from this for 2-3 years. Why do we have coaches? What does Greg Gross do, what did Milt Thompson do? Charlie..the "hitting guru" What? I wouldn't trade Pence or Victorino. Pence still has good power numbers and he will come around, and you can't replace the great defense that Victorino provides and his hitting is improving. Trade Blanton,Pierre,Wiggington and if someone would take the stiff, I would trade Howard in a heartbeat. He will never be the same player again!

Sell, sell, sell. It was a great run and won a World Title. Gutted the farm system to win a second and it didn't work. Build staff around Hamels, infuse farm system with talent and develop and be contenders again in 2-3 years.

Pence is not the special player I thought he could be and heading into 2013 with the possibility of a 15million dollar price tag, you have to move him. His numbers are far below others (Willingham, Melky Cabrera, etc.) in other OF's. I fear his numbers from last year (High AVG. HR, RBI) show he has peaked. You can get the most for him now, so just pull the trigger and do it.

Yeah I agree Pence is not as advertised. Guy makes you wonder huh? The whole issue with the Pence thing is who you replaces him with. I mean next year you need 3 outfielders. So roll the dice on Dom Brown. You know what your getting with Mayberry and you have a hole in right field you need to fill with a free agent. A free agent with a .750 OPS or better who makes less than $15m. Who's that? Who's got a .750+ OPS next year and isn't making at least 15 million? AND IS A FREE AGENT? Nick Swisher? Who else? If you go for a guy like Swisher why trade Pence for squat? Why not just keep Pence?

Hunter to Frisco for Gary Brown and Joe Panik. Dom to RF. Joe Blanton and Vic to the best buyers. Mayberry in CF for the rest of this year.
Maybe even Cliff Lee for Mike Olt and another Ranger prospect.

In a maybe uncharacteristic moment of positivity, I am going to look at this as a good development. We can argue about who should be traded (and I am sure we will after the fact) but this at least shows (if true) that RAJ seems willing to face the facts and clean house. Of course, I'd rather a GM that has a better track record be making the calls but that's too much to ask before tomorrow.

I'll tell you what can go wrong. Unless this is a trade to acquire prospects to flip, I can't understand it. I am a homer, but..a catcher? And Josh Osich? He's going to be 25, already had Tommy John, can throw high 90's and is most likely a setup man. If this is correct, this will be the first time I'll question Rube's motivations..horrible trade, horrible

Are you even watching the Phillies this year? Pence leaves guys on base every night, is horrible in the OF, can't knock a guy home from 3rd with less than 2 outs. This is not a guy you want to lock in for the future, especially with only 1 year left of arb left before he hits free agency. Move him as fast as you can and get some good fundamental ballplayers in here. I'm sick of watching guys like Pence and Vic make mental mistake after mental mistake.
