Five months ago, Charlie Manuel walked out of Citizens Bank Park with little more than a Wawa bag in hand.

Although he wasn’t thrilled, Manuel had agreed to take part in a press conference with his boss, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., to announce his dismissal as manager of the Phillies. Manuel had overseen five National League division titles, two NL pennants and the second World Series championship in franchise history in his nine seasons at the helm.

Manuel quietly left the building that day, but didn’t rule out a return at some point in the future. The Phillies offered Manuel a front office position as a parting gift.

A little less than a month before pitchers and catchers will report to Clearwater, Fla., Manuel has reportedly agreed to accept that job offer. According to Brian Startare, a radio host at 97.5 The Fanatic who had the manager write a forward for his upcoming book, Manuel has agreed to rejoin the Phillies.

Manuel’s role is undetermined, as the team has not confirmed the report.

Manuel’s position would probably be similar to the one he had when he first joined the Phillies in 2003, two years before he became the team’s manager. Last month, Amaro said he was still awaiting Manuel’s decision regarding such a job.

“He could be a hitting guru with the organization (and do some) troubleshooting and scouting, much like he was when he was here for (former general manager) Ed Wade,” Amaro said before Christmas. “I hope he comes on. He would be a tremendous asset for us. I think he can help us and me in a variety of ways.”
