It was an interesting baseball game, in that there were three key situations that may or may not have affected the outcome of the game.

***First, the Shane Victorino caught stealing in the ninth inning: It was Victorino's decision to go. The Phillies essentially give Rollins and Victorino a green light at all times. But a frustrated Charlie Manuel said afterward that the onus is on the runner to realize the situations when running is not prudent. With the tying run at the plate and no out in the ninth, that was the situation the Phillies were in. But Victorino ran on a 1-0 pitch to Matt Stairs and was gunned down.

“That was a mistake,”  said Manuel, who pulled Victorino aside in the dugout after the play. “We talk about our running game and things like that, but also you’ve got to know when to run. I can stop him, but at the same time, our baserunning, with the way we set it up, we like to think you won’t make mistakes like that.”

Victorino addressed reporters shortly after the clubhouse was opened to the media and issued a mea culpa.

“I (messed) up,” Victorino said. “It was a stupid situation there, but hey, I made a mistake. I’m not going to second-guess myself right there. I’ll face the reality that I messed up.”

***Second, Wes Helms' three-run home run in the fourth: Jamie Moyer threw a 2-2 fastball that either caught the inside corner or landed just outside. Marvin Hudson ruled it was the latter.

Home plate umpire Marvin Hudson ruled it was the latter situation, and on the very next pitch Helms sent a 3-2 change-up sailing into the left field seats for a three-run home run.

“It really doesn’t matter what I think,” Moyer said of the pivotal play, which sparked the Marlins to a 5-3 victory and handed the Phillies just their third defeat in 11 games. “You need to go ask Marvin.”

***Third, Ronny Paulino's RBI single up the middle in the sixth (if you are counting, all five runs were driven in by ex-Phillies). The Phillies were trying to pitch around Paulino, believing that the Marlins would leave Chris Volstad in to bat with the bases loaded and two out in the innings. After throwing Paulino three balls, Moyer unleashed a pitch that caught the plate. Paulino drove it up the middle for an RBI.

"I should have thrown it to the backstop," Moyer said.

Who knows if the Phillies would have won had any of the aforementioned three situations transpired differently. Even if Helms had struck out, there would have been one out and men on base in the fourth. Even if Paulino had walked, the Marlins might have pinch hit for Volstad in the sixth. And even if Victorino had remained at first, Stairs' groundout might have been turned into a double play.

That's the beauty of baseball.

Regardless of whether or not Moyer struck out Helms, he can't be putting the first two guys on base right there. That's brutal. That said, Moyer wasn't even my problem tonight. Aside from Howard, the bats didn't come to life and the baserunning mistakes were insanely stupid.

When Jamie pitches behind in the count he gets lit up. Its that simple. Not sure he has enough left to continue, but I hope I am wrong. Murph, does it look like he is facing reality, given his struggles ?

Here's a situation you missed, Dave, we don't hit well at home right now! Maybe we're swinging for the fences too much? Maybe the home cooking's too good? But not playing good situational small ball at home. Looking forward to the next road trip! Moyer's been figured out! Career record: 249-???.

I wonder if part of the problem was coming down from the emotional high of three highly charged games in Yankee Stadium.

Hey Oz - yes. I may start putting the radio on - I like Franzke and LA - they're a trip. I don't mind McCarthy but he's gotta learn to shut up. Remember the silence when Harry and Whitey just didn't have anything to say? Wheels is just plain annoying. I find myself at least once a game saying "Will you shut up, Wheeler?!" Matthews just stinks. Sarge was my fave when he played but that doesn't make you a good announcer/color guy.

McCarthy is fine... of course he isn't Harry. Sarge is terrible. I would like to see LA back doing color on TV with T-Mac. Wheels is wheels... safe in 3 inning per game doses. Not sure what the love-fest with Franzke is all about.

And on the baseball, Jimmy's first inning mistake was just as bad, if not worse, than Vic's. Howard's first HR should've been a 3-run job, not 2. He showed Paulino no respect on that play and it burned us for a run.

Shane & Jimmy dumb baserunning. Utley & Werth, anytime you want to start hitting at home would be good. McCarthy & Wheeler shut the he ll up.

Moyer couldn’t beat a team who had only three hitters batting over .250 (Hermida .270, Ramirez .317 and Cantu .275, the meat of the order), and two hitters around the Mendoza line (rookie lefty Coglan, who had two hits to go over .200 and Dan Uggla who is batting .200 after the game). I don’t know how long he can take this. He is not even making smart pitches (the 3-2 pitch to Helms and the 3-0 to Paulino). Being smart is the only thing he had left. As for Victorino’s and Rollins's baserunning blunders, they seem to have one or two of those every season.

I guess the only way we get rid of Wheeler is if Fox hires him to join Joe Buck. McCarthey ain't much better. Hope I don't wear out the mute button

Re the broadcasters, I'd love to watch the game with LA and Franzke on the radio but the radio broadcast is always one pitch behind the digital cable feed. Extremely frustrating. In this day and age, you'd think they could sync it up with the digital.
