Polanco to DL; Madson activated
Daily News staff
Third baseman Placido Polanco has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with lower back inflammation, retroactive to July 5, the Phillies announced.
To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, the club activated righthander Ryan Madson from the disabled list.
Polanco, 35, is hitting .274 with four home runs and 39 RBI in 83 games this season. He was voted in by the fans as the starting third baseman for the National League All-Star team, but did not play due to his injury.
Polanco traveled to Phoenix for the festivities, but said Monday that he hoped the rest over the break would allow him to return to the lineup.
Madson has not appeared in a major league game since June 18 due to a right hand contusion after he was hit with a comebacker in late May.
He was officially placed on the disabled list on June 28. He made one rehab appearance with single-A Clearwater this past Wednesday and pitched 1.0 scoreless inning with one strikeout. For the season, Madson is 3-1 with 15 saves and a 2.03 ERA in 31 appearances for the Phillies.
Also, righthander Vance Worley was officially recalled today to take the spot of righthander Scott Mathieson, who was optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley last Sunday. Worley will start tonight for the Phillies against the New York Mets at Citi Field.

Now all of a sudden, we need a 3rd baseman too! dgabs
@ DooDoo....but you failed to mention that his effort and heart are as big as his head! Love the guy... recGUY- His professionalism also.
scorpio27 - No only for now, for the future also. Polly breaks down every year it seems. We're stuck with a lot of pitching and LH OF prospect but can't seem to draft good infield prospects. EL Zorro
Charlie must not be a Mathieson fan because Carpenter, Baez, and Herndon's numbers are waaaay worse than Scott's, but Mathieson always seems to be the first one to go. drbob1- Mathieson was better this time up. He'll get his shot. They may just want to get him more regular work. s
- Scott M. has service time of 2.106, next is Zagursky so it makes sense to limit his increase when other options are available.

oh shut up freaks. It's a long season. He'll be fine. friedmozzarela
He'll be back. All these wins with so many guys on the DL. Hard to believe Harry. s
Aramis Ramirez would fit perfectly...Polly to 2b when health...Utley 2b/LF/1b stan the man too
The Phillies need to look for guys in their late twenties who can field, and hit .280 with no walks or power, if they expect their players to make it through the season. It's no surprise position players in their mid-to-late 30s break down and fade. That's been happening since sports began. They haven't trotted a regular third baseman out there under 30 since Scott Rolen. They replaced him with old, end of career David Bell, who was replaced with 30 something, journeyman Abraham Nunez' second to last season, who was replaced by Pedro Feliz' last few seasons in baseball, who was replaced by Polanco who is likely shot. I'm sure RAJ is tempted to replace Polly with a bargain deal on Hank Blalock in 2013, but I hope he can help himself and stick a lower cost, young guy in there. He doesn't need to be paying veteran salaries for "last year in the bigs" type of production. jtj06- A herniated lumbar disc is a serious problem for any person, but more so for athletes. Once herniated, discs do not rerturn to their normal position between vertebrae. Herniations can become more severe and accompanied by nerve impingement and spinal canal stenosis, both of which can make playing a professional sport difficult to impossible. Many athletes play with minor to moderate disc herniations and can be helped by nerve blocks, steroid injections, oral anti-inflammatory drugs and physical therapy. More severe herniations can make it difficult for players to perform and frequently require surgery to correct the problem. Polanco has had a number of injuries that were acute in nature. His disc herniation will continue to be chronic until definitive treatment is provided. The Phils are well served with Wilson Valdez as a defensive substitute, but Valdez is not Polanco's equal offensively. Michael Martinez has been showing signs of becoming a bonafide major league utility player, but he has not yet shown the hitting ability that would put him on the same plateau as Polanco. If the Phils decide to trade with the Royals for Melky Cabrera, they might also decide to trade for Wilson Betemit, a .285 switch hitter who can play every infield and outfield position. Of course, the Phils could also try to acquire Michael Young from the Rangers who are seriously looking for relievers. Young a perennial .300 hitter and run producer could not only help the Phils this year, but also next year when Rollins becomes a free agent and when the rest of the infield's chronic medical conditions become more chronic.
@drbob...Mathieson went back down so he can get stretched out again as he's back to starting in AAA...It can provide potential depth in the second half...But you're right, Manuel doesn't trust him a bit. bearsfriend
WHERE'S Cody Ransom when we need him?....He's going nuts in the PCL...AAA Reno 24 hr's 84 rbi's .325avg...they must play high arc out there. bearsfriend
hunter pence hunter pence hunter pence!!!!! Bob65S
@bearsfriend: Last night he pitched for LHV and gave up a two run homer in 3 innings. I have a feeling that if they end up making a trade, Mathieson and maybe a guy like Joe Savery will be leaving, since the guy coming here probably won't be a star type player, but rather a veteran OF who can hit .280 or a reliever near the end of a contract. drbob1
Saw this one coming a while ago. "Pinched nerve" is almost always a euphemism for bulging disc. He's in the same situation as Roy Oswalt. Better hope Utley stays reasonably healthy. ijj
Maybe the Phils will acquire David Wright from the Mets before tonight's game. sonnybuoy01
whatever became of scott podsednik?.....so much for that pipe dream SyddBarrett- He struggled at Lehigh Valley, & then he got hurt. He's on the DL now.

I said it two weeks ago...........3B is going to be the problem in the line-up, RAJ needs to bring in someone fast. PP - love the guy but 35 year olds in any sport do not get "healthier".........biologically impossible especially w/back problems (watch Pronger he too is nearing the end). I would use Mayberry / Ibanez / Brown between the 2 corners in the OF - but the priority is w/o question 3B. Northcountry
Polanco is so overrated by this fan base. He doesn't get on base much, hits for no power, has little speed. People get so enamored with a 300 BA, give me a guy who hits 270 with a slash line of 390/480 over Poloanco any day. Ed Gein- Polly will never have the SLG. He may come close on the OBP but not very often. I'm okay with less power in his slot but, yes, give me a higher OBP over BA any day.
He's a good player who had a few great years. I like the guy but he's aging fast. His best years are behind him unless he manages to defy odds and catch fire once in a while. What you see with him are hot months followed by nagging injuries and slumps. s - I agree 100%. He is also overrated by his manager and GM. Neither he nor Rollins belong anywhere near the top of an order. It essentially dooms the Phillies to a ceiling of mediocrity when it comes to offense.
jtj06 - They need more infielders in the farm system who aren't years away and who are legitimate major league prospects. The cupboard is pretty bare there. I know we want to win this year but, at some point, a trade has to address the lack of minor league infielder prospects.
Polanco is signed through 2012 so you hope this isn't as serious as it may be.
Here's what baffles me: In all the raging debate over Ryan Howard and RBIs the fact that he gets more RBI opportunities than anyone else in baseball is always thrown out there. How is this possible, especially this year, with all our hitting woes at the top of the order? Somewhere the numbers seem to depart from reality ... or maybe it's from perception. :-) s
Why couldn't we get Michael Young...would have played 162 games this year! DavezMental.Com
Phils payroll = $109.4M in order of highest contract to lowest:(Lee/Halladay/Howard/Utley/Blanton/Victorino/Polanco/Ruiz/Contreras)
Oswalt and Lidge with buyouts of $3.5M ($2M + $1.5M respectively)-both likely gone.
2011 Obligation up to $112.9M
Hamels, Kendrick, Francisco, Orr and Valdez under arbitration control.
Ibanez, Rollins, Madson, Baez, Schneider & Gload are Free Agents. Likely returns only Rollins (65% chance) and Madson (15% chance) Rollins should recognize what he has and do a 3-year $18M deal & I see Madson following in Werth's shoes.
Before arbitration and FA signings, Phils have approximately $53M.
Make a 4/5 year offer to Cole.
Call the Dodgers and find a way to pry Matt Kemp ($7.1 in 2011, 2012 ARB. and FA after 2013) and Clayton Kershaw ($500k in 2011, club control through 2015-great insurance if Cole were to leave via FA in 2013). ATrucksess
s- Howard leads the league in RBI oppurtunities this year, it isn't perception it's factual, you act like people make stats like that up. The only perception most Phillie fans have as that if someone points out issues in Ryan Howard's game and says that his contract is not a good one, they are labeled a hater. Really it comes down to this, myself, and a lot of other baseball fans, as well as many baseball writers don't value RBI as an individual statistic. It is a function of your team and how well the people hitting in front of you do at getting in scoring position. Rueben Sierra hit 230 and had a 288 OBP in 1993, but he had 101 RBI I guess that means he had a great year...
Ed Gein- You may have read me wrong. I believe the stats. But they seem at odds with all of our offensive woes. I know they're not made up -- that was a joke. So somehow this year, with Utley out more than half of the first half and with Victorino and Polly with injury issues, we managed to get a lot of those top of the order guys on base. I never dug into the stats to see how we did it. I would have expected it in other years due to Utley alone. This year it surprised me.
I also was not a fan of RH's contract when it was signed. It's very unlikely he performs to that money in the later years. For now, I'd just like a chance for another parade though and I'd like to see RH at least show some signs that he may not be in rapid decline. Given last year's injury I want to see how his whole year looks. And I agree: Any good fan should be able to question without being labeled a hater. You get those guys who post calling him names -- that's where that perception starts.
s - Your head's in your behind, Ed. Only two players in baseball with at least 2,000 chances have capitalized on a higher percentage of their RBI opportunities since 2006 than Ryan Howard (Miguel Cabrera and Aramis Ramirez). Howard has knocked in 18.4 percent of the runners on base when he bats. Pujols has knocked in 17.62, ARod 17.6, Teixeira 16.8, Utley 16.57 and Prince Fielder 15.61. Yes, Howard has more opportunities than anyone, but he should get some credit for doing a better job than most of taking advantage of those chances.

If Phils trade for Michael Young, he could take Polanco's spot, and when he comes back, move Young to the OF. Young could then back up Howard at #5. However, that's not going to happen as the Rangers probably would want a good young arm like Bastardo in a trade. philly-born
philly-born.........if the Rangers ONLY wanted Bastardo for Michael Young, don't you think that would be a steal by the Phillies worth taking? sonnybuoy01- Tough call. What I don't like about that is we end up with Perez as our only bullpen lefty and Zagurski as the next option. Zagurski hasn't impressed me in the majors. Also, Bastardo is 25 and Young is 34. As others have noted, I see a real need to start getting some younger players in the mix. The infield is aging all at once with no one waiting in the wings. s
Awwww! The fans are getting so worried now and the Phils are in NY to play the mets. Such a great time to see you you and your team go down! Enjoy! MRD
Hope you have your tissues ready and Don't even think about coming to NY and giving us the BS about your time. We won't take it. MRD
Comment removed.
The 911 calls are getting busy in Philly for more Ambulances. This is serious! I say by Septemeber the team is out of the Playoff race. Everyone in Major League Baseball will be laughing at you losers! MRD- I read that perennial Cy Young candidate R.A. Dickey had tightness in his gluteal muscle last time out. I guess that's from the Mets getting spanked so much this season.
s
We have Mike M to take over at 3rd. Polly will be back, better than ever. Bush3
Hopefully, the youth movement begins soon... Jeff Dowder
Good for you recGuy but your just to ignore these guys. Perhaps Phils should inquire about Wiggington. Phils need another reliever and cant trade the good ones. Young would be a great get but does not figure to happen. Don w
