Polanco sits again, to see doctor tomorrow

Greetings from an overcast and drizzly Sun Life Stadium, where in an hour-and-a-half the Phillies will attempt to cap off a three-game sweep against Anibal Sanchez and the Marlins. The big news this afternoon is that Placido Polanco is once against out of the line-up, the second straight day he has been sidelined with back soreness. Polanco said he is scheduled to see a specialist tomorrow, but he did not sound too concerned about the long-term ramifications of the pain, which occurs in his lower back and has caused some numbness to shoot down both sides of his legs.

"I can play, it's just not comfortable," Polanco said. "They decided not to play me and take advantage of that day off tomorrow. Let me rest and heal and then come back Friday."

Shane Victorino has a first degree sprain of his right thumb, so he is not in the line-up again today. Instead, John Mayberry Jr. is starting in center field, while last night's starting center fielder, Michael Martinez, will start at third. The Phillies say they will re-evaluate Victorino on Friday prior to the start of a three-game series against the Braves, their last action before the four-day All-Star Break.

The Phillies could elect to keep Victorino off the disabled list if they think he will be ready to play by the start of their first series of the second half, which begins next Friday against the Mets. Or, if they decide they'd rather have an extra pitcher or hitter for the Braves series, they could place him on the DL, at which point he would be eligible to return next Tues., July 19.

The line-up:

  1. Jimmy Rollins SS
  2. Michael Martinez 3B
  3. Chase Utley 2B
  4. Ryan Howard 1B
  5. Raul Ibanez LF
  6. Carlos Ruiz C
  7. Domonic Brown LF
  8. John Mayberry Jr. CF
  9. Kyle Kendrick RHP

Brad Lidge will pitch in his second rehab game tomorrow at Class A Lakewood.
