Phillies third baseman Placido Polanco is heading to the disabled list but is not going to have surgery to repair a sports hernia.

“They made the decision that I’m going on the DL. Not me. I don’t make decisions here," he said. "Combined we decided that I can benefit from that. We’d rather that I miss a week now than miss a week in September.”

Polanco took grounders and swung the bat before tonight's game.

“Every time I move the leg, I can feel it," he said. "I know I’m going to be feeling it for the rest of the year. I can probably get it a little better before (being activated).”

He added that he could play if his condition remained the same and is "feeling better."

“We decided to get the shot, which I already did," he said. "And just try to manage it through with exercise and therapy. And at the same time, do my baseball stuff and stay sharp. Keep moving my legs and everything ...

“Just from talking to the doctor who is going to do the surgery and did the shots, he thinks a little different than we do. He’s more of an aggressive guy and he was saying like, ‘Go out there and do what you have to do and if it hurts, you know you’re going to have to have surgery and then we’ll do it right now.’ But I don’t know about the rehab part. That’s what’s missing and we’re playing for something important, so we don’t want to do that. We don’t want to go out there and be that aggressive when we don’t have to.”
