Phils to miss Josh Johnson
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
This time of year, you have to take what you can get, and the Phillies have gotten a couple of fortunate breaks over the last week that prevented them from having to face two of the top pitchers in the National League. First, it was Johan Santana going down with an injury in the week leading up to the Phils' series against the Mets. Now, it is Marlins ace Josh Johnson, who according to the Miami Herald will miss his scheduled start against the Phillies on Wednesday due to back and shoulder problems.
Johnson had hoped to throw a bullpen session yesterday, but was unable to do so, ruling him out for Wednesday. He sounds unlikely to pitch again this season.
Johnson has faced the Phillies twice this year, holding them to one unearned run on 10 hits in 15 innings. The imposing righthander has struck out 11 while walking two in his two starts -- the first a 1-0 loss in Roy Halladay's perfect game, the second a 2-0 win on June 10 when he allowed three hits in eight scoreless innings.

Tonight, it is Joe Blanton against Andrew Miller, who struggled against the Phils the last time out.
Tomorrow, it is Cole Hamels against Adalberto Mendez, who held the Phillies to one hit in six innings of a loss last Monday.
Wednesday it is Roy Halladay against Alex Sanabia, who most recently held the Nationals to three hits and three walks in 6 2/3 scoreless innings.
Sanabia will be serving the last game of a 5 game suspension for his part in the brawl vs. the Nats a couple weeks back. Edwin Rodriguez was quoted as saying they will be going with a bullpen-by-committee for Wednesday's game. CyHamels
Good to miss Josh Johnson. I wonder if Ruben should talk to JJ about becomming a phillie next year? Anyone know his contract status? Bob65S
if we can just manage 5+ runs tonight, we have a good shot at taking all 3. Stay focussed Phils and we got it! - He's a monster...hope he enjoys a nice rest. Of course, the choppers won't face Johnson or Santana either, so it's a wash. Let's hope Bluto is ready from pitch 1 tonight. Gotta bear down for all 27 outs. Fish never give up, witness the 6 they put up when down 10-0 last week. When they ran Jimmy into another stay on the DL (pending outcome of the MRI) Eephus
thanks toeman. where did you get that great information? Potus415- I wouldnt say the Phillies were 'missing' him, Dave......... joeolive
- You can say that again "Toeman"
Bob65S....in Jan 2010, he signed a 4 year 39 million (all guaranteed) extension with the Marlins. I would love to see him in a Philly uniform, but no way would the Marlins trade him within the division. ESFjellin

Josh Johnson signe a 4 year, $39 million contract in the spring. He's not going anywhere... Eilex826
Comment removed.- Yes, these injuries are a mixed blessing, because the Bravos play the Mets and Fish down the stretch also. Now if JJ just misses this start and can pitch against Atlanta next week...... blaqjaq
- Haha joeolive. It's not a wash that the Braves don't face him either because it helps whoever finishes 2nd in the Wild Card race. john421
ESFjellin...baseball contracts are always "all guaranteed" to the player, as are those in basketball and hockey. Remember all of the "dead money" paid to Adam Eaton? Only football contracts have guaranteed and non-guaranteed monies in them. southpaw57
at least we won't be down 3-0 after the first 1/2 of the first inning,...because we lead-off,....hopefully we can get Howard to go yard in the first inning and ride it out,.....still say Howard will be the NL RBI king this year even with Pujols as hot as he is;....and Howard missed 15 games on DL to boot SyddBarrett
I saw Toeman in a Dr. Scholls commercial. He was hammered. mick314
