The Phillies have signed righthander Chad Qualls to a 1-year, $1.15 million contract, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. The contract includes performance and awards bonuses.

Qualls, 33, was 6-8 with a 3.51 ERA in a team-high 77 games for the San Diego Padres last season. In his final 19 appearances, he had a 1.96 earned run average and held batters to a .219 batting average. Qualls made the eighth-most relief appearances among all major league pitchers last year.

Qualls has made more appearances (512) than any other major league pitcher since 2005 and ranks second in relief wins (34), trailing only Jesse Crain (38).

He was a second-round selection by the Houston Astros. His career record is 38-34 with 51 saves and a 3.78 ERA in 537 games for the Astros (2004-07), Arizona Diamondbacks (2008-10), Tampa Bay Rays (2010) and Padres (2011).

Hard to believe this guys was "out there." A veteran pickup who can help the young guys as Ruben continues to stockpile the arms.

REally, you obviously have seen his stats. Last year when he didn't pitch in SD or Yellowstone: 5.05 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, .303 BAA, measly 4.5 K/9....year that's a real winner. At the same cost Lidge would have been a much better choice.

Don't worry there will be plenty of fireworks when Qualls takes the mound; well for the other team at least.

good pickup -- nice to see Mrs. Amaro (i.e., dogbiscuit) relays my constructive criticisms to her son -- shame they can't get a lefty too

For $1.15 mil, THAT is a really nice pick-up. The guy is extremely durable, can set-up, pitch middle relief, go a couple of innings if need be and even close games on a short-term basis. He should be a good, veteran addition to this bullpen.

I still can't believe my 17-game pack includes an on-deck game vs the Pirates. Otherwise, TheDude is pumped.

Nice pick up by the Phils. Now we need a little more offense.

Jim, you said it. This guy is as durable as they come. He pitches well in close games, even in those ugly men-on-base situations. This guy will shine with the Phils, now that he has a good team around him. Should be hungry for a ring, as should the rest of the team next year.

You obviously haven't seen his stats either. Pitching in SD doesn't count. Jaime Moyer would be a Cy Young contender in SD.

They only picked him up as a scapegoat for losses. He's too erratic for this town; Philly's going to kill him.

Low risk. I like it. We needed someone to fill that 19th inning void with the departure of Valdez. Going into 2012, there are a lot more bullpen options to look at in spring training and a good mix of young and old guys.
