Phils shut out by Rangers
Daily News staff
With Chase Utley looming, the Phillies lost to the Texas Rangers, 2-0, on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park.
Utley, the injured second baseman who hasn’t played a game this season because of a knee injury, will be activated off the disabled list on Monday and could play against the Reds.
The Rangers’ Matt Harrison (4-4) took a five-hitter into the ninth inning, striking out three and walking three.
Harrison fanned Ryan Howard to open the ninth, but was lifted after he walked Ben Francisco. The lefty was just the latest pitcher to shut down the slumping Phillies. Neftali Feliz got the final two outs for his ninth save.
Mitch Moreland had an RBI double off Phillies starter Roy Oswalt (3-2) and Craig Gentry added a suicide squeeze. Oswalt allowed six hits.
Also, the Phillies will also place Joe Blanton on the disabled list and will recall Vance Worley, who is expcted to start Tuesday against the Reds.
The Phils also optioned infielder Pete Orr to Triple A Lehigh Valley.
Blanton, 30, is 1-2 with a 5.50 ERA in six starts this season. He was a late scratch in his last scheduled start, May 19 against the Colorado Rockies, with soreness in his throwing elbow.
Worley went 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in four games with the Phillies in 2011.

Good hitting, bad pitching, good pitching, bad hitting it's all the same. chill out. were still in first. littleman163
This comment has been deleted. Phishface- ive been saying that since he proved in 2008 that his mvp season was a fluke. he has gotten worse every year since then.. he's been invisible in the postseason.. and yet amaro picks up his 2011 option at $8 million per year. valdez can give you pretty much the same thing as rollins and at a fraction of the price. too late to trade him - he is worthless - hopefully amaro doesnt try to re-sign him
zwarte piet - All that needs to happen is for him to accept hitting low in the lineup. He's still a vacuum at SS. Everyone would be lamenting the loss of his glove if the melodramatic Philly lynch mob had it's way. I can accept his current offensive output, just not at the high end of the lineup. He needs to be hitting 6,7,8 in 2011. It's an error in logic to think he's anywhere close to what he was 3-4 years ago at the plate but showing him the door because of it is an even worse error. The Phillies aren't the only team in MLB having problems scoring. The Rangers are another team, for one, and that's a good team. The Twins had a great year last year, this year they stink. The Phillies got 5 hits off a tough lefthander...next, try to string 'em together, boys. I'd be discouraged with a 2 or less hit effort....which have been frequent over the last 2 Springs. road515
Chaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase............... M60tanker
Rollins had 2 chances to move a runner over and hits those little flyballs. His little goofups are killing us.Ibanez couldn't get a cluck hit if his life depended on it and does Howard ever get a hit when he has 2 strikes on him... lewisbratspis
very good pitching and defense today. bad hitting. still they took 2 out of 3 from a very good team. welcome back chase. igglephan
The Phillies are giving young guys a chance - Francisco, Mayberry, Martinez - but none of them deliver. Brown gets called up. Goes 0 for 4. None of these guys can take the opportunity and run with it. steveku2- How can you possibly throw in Brown when they guy JUST got called up and only had four at bats! His uniform is not even dirty yet and after one stinking day in the line up people are critical? Strange considering how many chances and apologies are used for Ibanez the deadest piece of wood in the outfield. Brown must be played every day and for once, the Phillies moronic management have to abandon the archaic, outdated view of platooning left hand hitters, what a travesty. In view of the fact their offense is in a coma, using Brown EVERY day for a month cannot possibly be any worse then what they are producing with Ibanez, Mayberry and Francisco.

First place is still first place. zonaindie2
Poor hitting is one thing; stupid at bats, i.e Rollins, have got to go! Jimmy has no idea what he's doing at the plate. Swinging at the first offering from the pitcher is not helping himself or the team. Where is Greg Gross working with these guys on situational baseball??? It's difficult to hit a three-run homer without any baserunners; but apparently, most of the Phils lineup overlooks this aspect. Heard today that GG isn't going to work with Howard on going the other way! Why not? His AB's are the perfect example of insanity; doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome--he continues to hit directly into the shift. When the shift is on, try hitting the other way, what has he got to lose? Waste of more good pitching, and don't expect Utley to change much since he's very rusty not facing major league pitching.
At least we're in first and that's good. But Charlie needs to manage his players AB's a whole lot better until the thunder returns to the lineup. mad2002mad
First place is still first place? Haven't we said that about ALL of our teams that were in first place that went down in flames? Come on! Jolt this stinkin offense Amaro. emphasis on "offense." Jeffritoe
