Phillies to activate Lidge from DL
Daily News staff
Reliever Brad Lidge will be activated from the disabled list in time for tomorrow night’s game against the New York Mets, the Phillies announced.
Lidge, 33, was placed on the disabled list on March 26, while recovering from right elbow surgery. He combined to go 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA with four walks and eight strikeouts in eight rehab appearances between Triple A Lehigh Valley, Double A Reading and Single A Clearwater. After allowing five runs over his first two rehab appearances in 1.2 innings, Lidge pitched 7.0 scoreless innings over his final six appearances.
To make room for Lidge on the 25-man roster, lefthanded pitcher Antonio Bastardo was optioned to Lehigh Valley after yesterday’s game.
Lidge deserves a break from everyone who is dumping on him. He earned it with his 2008 PERFECT, again PERFECT, World Series Championship Season. Last year he NEVER made excuses, pouted or blamed anyone other than himself for his troubles. He has shown nothing but class and has earned my respect. If the baseball gods told us in September 2008 that we will win the World Series that year and in exchange possibly not see another for years, EVERY single one of us would have accepted it. If you say you wouldn't have you are lying and you know it. I hope Lidge comes back strong. But if he doesn't, don't be the jerk Philly fans that the rest of the country makes us out to be by proving them right. Apache9- Totally agree about desirability of getting Madson the heck out of the 9th inning. Would be nice if Lidge could return to form. I have my doubts, but would like to be wrong.
Let's all hope lidge can close this year. nilsen
Poodle dog Madson & Joan Baez need to be sent to AAA not Bastardo. Philadelphiafreedom81
LOL---"strandman"---Good one---Now go back to WIP and devolve will_wonders_never_cease
Which version, 2010 version, what ever that will be. He will never achieve what he did 2008. 2009 version is more probable. I can't believe he would be as bad as Madson is, if so forget about this year eaglesman1
OK. Please make me understand this???? They send down a Kid that throws 92+ fastball but keep a guy that throws from the same side, that can't put a dent on the radar gun at 90MPH....????? HMMMMMMMM???? Anyone?????? ............ On another note and topic: The Philadelphia Phillies "SHOULD" Lock up Jayson Werth Now and not let it drag thru the Allstar game as I'm sure that his agent will tell them to get it done by then or he'll walk at the end of the season. There, I said it. The good "DR" has changed his veiw on keeping Mr Werth. Philly4fanDoc- yo, Jason and Mike - have you seen Herndon pitch? We must be watching different pitchers. I saw a stat when he came into the game last night that made me shake my head. He's given up like 18 hits in 7 innings but those results do not tell you the whole story. He has great stuff. So much so that I don't think the umpires know him well enough yet to give him some calls he deserves. I like him but it's going to start getting crowded down there real soon. vafan
@jasonb100... couldn't agree more! TerryW
Agree with those who say Herdon should go, and I predict soon he will. Bastardo will be back. Hope Lidge can close, Madson sure can't. Durbin is the horse down there, if Lidge can close with Madson set up, that would be an improvement. Hitters better light it up again this season, pitching very shaky so far except for Doc. Hope Blanton and Happ bring something to the table when they get back or this season could be a street fight all the way. Z-Force
During spring training Herndon looked better than any of our prospects. His sinker is better than Kendricks. Kendrick and Bastardo have options. The Phils need young players to offset the payroll if they want to have a chance at resigning Werth. Romero has a $4.5 million option next year that won't get picked up. Herndon had 1 bad outing and the other he induced enough ground balls (which is his why they have him) but the hits made it through the infield. So what. They will give Herndon every chance to stay with the team. And stop listening to that idiot Ricky Botalico EarlKeese
CLIFF LEE says he thinks it would be a good idea to keep David Herndon, thank you..... stan the man too
Give us news on Rollins!! forget1980
Ricky Bo, Wild Thing, McDowell, Billy Wags, Lidge. The 9th has never been safe, despite the incredible number of saves in this bunch. zdog
I am looking forward to Lidge having a great year and winning NL comeback player of the year, and making those of you who have bailed on the guy, eat your words. laser5
