Phillies sign Miguel Cairo

The Phillies have added another veteran infielder to the mix, signing 34-year-old Miguel Cairo to a minor league contract. Cairo hit .249/.316/.330 with no home runs and 23 RBI in 221 at-bats for Seattle last season. Cairo's versatility - he played every position except center field and catcher last season - and his pinch-hitting ability (he is a career .284 hitter in those situations) were obviously attractive to the Phillies. But Cairo, a righthander, will have to compete with veteran Eric Bruntlett, prospect Jason Donald, and non-roster invitees like Marcus Giles and Pablo Ozuna if he hopes to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster. Cairo, who turns 35 in May, has played 13 big leagues seasons for the Blue Jays, Rays, Cubs, Cardinals, Yankees, Mets and Mariners. He is a career .266 hitter and is expected to report to camp tomorrow. Cairo would have to be considered a long-shot to make the team, but with Chase Utley's status uncertain for Opening Day, he'll have an opportunity to prove himself this spring.
