Phillies shuffle arms again

POSTED: Sunday, June 14, 2009, 11:09 AM

The Phillies continued to shuffle arms in their injury depleted bullpen, optioning lefthander Sergio Escalona back to Triple A Lehigh Valley and selecting the contract of righthander Tyler Walker from the IronPigs.

Walker is 2-1 with a 1.40 earned run average in 15 relief appearances in Triple A. He has struck out 20 and walked three in 19.1 innings pitched.

Escalona was called up Saturday and allowed two runs and three hits in two innings of the Phillies' 11-6 loss to the Red Sox.

looks like in the current environment if a called-up guy doesn't do the job immediately, he gets a ticket on the first bus back down. excellent. management of the past gave guys way too much leash.

Tyler Walker has always been a great Triple A pitcher...

Escalona is good too! He gives up his first major league runs, and gets sent back? Why not Tasch?

when is the "failed experiment" of Taschner going to end. I was at last nights' game and I said when Charlie put him in we'd give up the chance at the game. he should have put Escalona in in the 5th and then with his shutout inning we'd put more pressure on Daiske, instead we gave up another 3 and the game was basically over. DFA taschner NOW.

Agree, Taschner has been horrible since he got here. How did anyone thing a cast-off from a team with a bad staff was going to succeed??? Made no sense then, and is not working now. Need to trade him for a few bats or send him to A ball.

It sounds like they're going to call up a minor league reliever with options and a fresh arm until they can make a deal for a more permanent solution. Escalona looked a lot better than Taschner and Kendrick, but most likely he wouldn't have been available today. I, too, was at last night's game and knew that Taschner would give back runs. Beside being lefthanded, what special quality does he possess? He doesn't throw particularly hard, he doesn't have great control, he doesn't have an outstanding breaking ball or gimmick pitch, he doesn't even throw from a weird angle, like some of those sidearm scrubs who manage to stick around for years without much talent. I'm lefthanded, a few months younger than Moyer, and I can occasionally stun a batter with my knuckleball. Call me up for a game!

the reason Kendrick-Escalona-Walker roller coaster happened this weekend has much less to do with performance and much more to do with availability to pitch today...

The whole thing with Koplove is a shame.

Hey bark-- Dont forget that Romero, Eyre,Condrey were also cast0offs from other teams-- But to your point, this one [Taschner]is an obvious failure-- a trade seems iminent now!

they give up on there young arms quickly, WHY is Taschner still there, they've cornered the market on backup 36 year old catchers, DID NOT give John Mayberry much of a chance, put Bruntlett in for defense in the outfield and he misplays a ball, for all the talk about Lidge's problems, anyone else notice that Dobbs and Bruntlett give you next to nothing, coming off the bench???

Yea, I hope that guy that told me I had no baseball sense because I said he sucked last week comes back on this board, what a dope! We all knew Trashner sucked. He might have passed off as being OK in non-pressure situations, but when the game is on the line he blows it because he blows. I love the Walker move, he has actually had success in the majors in the past, who knows maybe he can stick around for a little.

heaterman, what happened with Koplove was he had an option in his contract that he could opt out after June 1st if he wasn't on the major league roster and he wasn't so he opted out and I believe he's with Pittsburgh now.

Where's Majewski? I'd rather have a right-hander who gets righties out than left-hander who can't get lefties out.

Taschner and to a lesser extent Park, are marginal at best. Dobbs and Bruntlett don't give you much off the bench either, those outfielders, playing every day are going to be gassed by August, if they don't come up with a better option coming off the bench, than they currently have. Anyone have Geoff Jenkins number, he can't be any worse than what they currently have in Dobbs and Bruntlett, both hitting UNDER 200?

Amaro is running this like I run my fantasy football team. How about finding an upgrade on Bruntlett. He is garbage.

what happened to majewski? he was the last cut off the staff and went to AAA? i watched the opening episode of "The Pen" last night on MLB channel..maybe all these moves the last 3 days was to get more plot lines for the show? as for taschner, think they feel guilty that he had to move to philly right when his wife was having a baby.. he should be gone as soon as eyre comes back- two lefties is enough..now scott, lets take it easy running from the bullpen to the mound..no more pulled hammies!

bruntless is fine as a utility infielder..a complete joke as an outfielder and pinch hitter... yes, they need the pitcher and a right handed 4th outfielder...
