Phillies fill in rotation

POSTED: Thursday, July 22, 2010, 6:07 PM

The Phillies have named their starters for Saturday and Sunday, and neither is a new name to the mix.

According to pitching coach Rich Dubee, Kyle Kendrick is scheduled to start Saturday in his usual spot in the rotation against Colorado and ace Ubaldo Jimenez, and J.A. Happ is then scheduled to pitch Sunday in his return to the big leagues.

Kendrick was sent to Triple A hours after he gave up seven runs in five innings, including three homers in the bottom of the fifth, against the Cardinals on Monday night.

“My command was off all night. I was falling behind hitters,” he said after the game. “I was behind in the count and left some pitches up. I made some mistakes and they hit them where they should have. It wasn’t good at all. I was 2-0, 3-1 all night and then I paid for it in the fifth.”

Happ looked more than ready to resume his role in the Phillies rotation against Indianapolis for Triple A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday night.

He was pulled from his start after three innings. He located the ball consistently on both sides of the plate, striking out the first batter he faced on that surprise neck-level fastball that he would spring on hitters during his successful rookie campaign. In three scoreless innings, he allowed three hits, no walks, and struck out three. According to the Indianapolis television broadcast, his velocity routinely touched 92-93.

Also, Jamie Moyer will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained ulnar collateral and a sprained flexor pronator in his left elbow. He will be out "quite some time," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said.

Amaro said the possibility of surgery is "ambiguous."

Moyer left Tuesday night's game after 47 pitches.

Is Pedro in the mix again this year? I will send Baez down to get him. He can even spend a week at his house hanging out.

Doesn't much matter, Ubaldo Jimenez pitches Saturday anyway. Might as well throw Kendrick out there.

Just trade Werth and call it a day. Wade Davis seems to be an equitable return. It is fairly obvious that Amaro is being asked to give up too much for good starters. The other option is getting bullpen help in the way of a top of the line pitching prospect. I know that it is silly to try to convince Oswalt to come to the Phillies. Haren is a very poor second half pitcher.

so hamels gives up one walk in 8 innings / 25 batters faced and lidge gives up a walk only facing 4 batters. KK is brought back up to pitch this weekend to get us back on track. guys, we're in trouble. the good news is the birds start training camp next week. how about getting rid of CONvick and use kendrick as our back up qb, atleast he'll earn his money sitting on the pine.

Sounds like the plan for a conceded season to me. I hope they can trade Werth for some pieces that can get us optimistic about 2011......

Yeah...RAJ is doing little to endear himself with the fans...let alone rebuild his significantly tarnished reputation as a qualified GM. He looked us all in the eye from the telecast booth on Tuesday night and all but said a major trade for a pitcher was coming. I understand trades are difficult, especially when they are made public and debated in the media, but he shouldn't be playing with the fans' expectations imho.

If Happ pitches poorly on Sunday, how will that affect his trade value in the Roy Oswalt deal?

Trade Werth if you can get BJ or Davis or some studs on the farm from the Rays. Use the Red Sox interest to get it done. The pitcher trades are done Oswalt wants his option picked up and Haren would take too much. Just win some games and see what happens.
