Phillies set NLCS roster

POSTED: Thursday, October 15, 2009, 12:25 PM

The Phillies set their National League Championship Series roster this morning.

As expected, Kyle Kendrick and Brett Myers have been left off and Chan Ho Park and Eric Bruntlett have been added after they were not on the Division Series roster. The moves give the Phillies 11 pitchers instead of 12, but add an extra bench player.

Myers allowed two walks in two-thirds of an inning in Game 2 against Colorado and Kendrick did not pitch.

Park has been rehabbing an injurred hamstring suffered in mid-September but yesterday proclaimed himself ready to return. Bruntlett gives the Phillies an extra pinch-runner or defensive replacements for late in games. Pitcher Cliff Lee saw pinch-running duties in the NLDS when the bench was thinned.

Here is the roster:

Catchers (2):  Paul Bako and Carlos Ruiz

Infielders (7): Eric Bruntlett, Miguel Cairo, Greg Dobbs, Pedro Feliz, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley

Outfielders (5): Ben Francisco, Raul Ibañez, Matt Stairs, Jayson Werth and Shane Victorino

Pitchers (11): Righthanders Joe Blanton, Chad Durbin, Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, Pedro Martinez, Chan Ho Park and lefthanders Antonio Bastardo, Scott Eyre, Cole Hamels, J.A. Happ and Cliff Lee.

No thought of adding Mayberry instead of Bruntlett?

As long as Bruntlett only plays the field and runs I am fine - if he bats not good

Thank goodness for the return of Bruntlett. I can now see him batting in a key situation and doing nothing.

I agree. I'd rather have Mayberry. Faster, better outfielder, already have Cairo to play the infield. And if you God forbid need to use him as a hitter he can actually pop one unlike Beardo.

Yes Mayberry may have been better and get rid of Stairs or Dobbs

Forgot about Mayberry. I guess they could have used Jamie's spot in the roster to include him because he was recalled after Sept. 1. They don't need an extra infielder, and Mayberry gives you more speed, better outfield defense and is a better hitter.

How about we just let the manager manage? We all criticize his wacky moves but he won us a world series last season and we beat the rockies with some obscure moves... In the end, who cares who gets it done as long as it gets done. Charlie knows his players and his confidence in his players is contageous in that clubhouse... Let's go phils

As much as I don't like Bruntlett as a hitter, I like him as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement. The other night, Charlie was forced to use Cairo in left after using Ibanez and Francisco. From this standpoint, I actually agree with bringing Bruntlett back on the roster.

Yeah, why not Mayberry? That HR against the Yankees was SWEET! And he's just as quick, if not more so, on the bases. Besides, who the heck would Bruntlett replace on defense? The Phils starting infield is a rock!

Mayberry stinks. Bruntlett is versatile, and has playoff experience.

Charlie Manuel reminds me of the coach in little league who wants desperately go get everyone involved. The only possible reason to add bruntlett is because you feel bad for him. He's not particularly good at anything and he's not all that fast either. Do you really need to carry cairo AND bruntlett? Charlie felt bad for him.
