High Cheese: Phillies name bench coach

POSTED: Friday, November 21, 2008, 11:43 AM

The Phillies have named Pete Mackanin as their bench coach. He replaces Jimy Williams, who opted not to return after two seasons with the Phils.

Mackanin, 57, spent this past year as a pro scout for the New York Yankees after managing the Cincinnati Reds for the final 3 months of the 2007 season. The Reds went 41-39 (.513) and had the second-best record in the National League Central Division during his tenure.

In 2005, Mackanin was interim manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates for the team’s final 26 games.  He spent seven seasons on the major league coaching staffs of the Montreal Expos (third-base coach, 1997-2000) and the Pirates (bench coach, 2003-05).

Mackanin appeared in 18 games for the Phillies over the 1978 and 1979 seasons as a player during a 9-year big-league career that also included stops with Texas, Montreal and Minnesota.

With Mackanin’s hiring, Sam Perlozzo has been named the third-base coach. Perlozzo had ben hired last week to an unspecified role. He replaces Steve Smith, who was fired.

Wogles, You need to get this notion that Bowa and Ed Wade are the reason why the Philies won the title, Becasue the last time I checked neither Bowa nor Wade were in the organization when they won it right? Yes, Ed Wade should be given credit for getting players like Utley, Howard, Rolins, etc. But lets be honest here, Gillick and Mnauel did what was needed to do to bring a championsip to this town.

I had an affair w/ Pete's dog when he played for the Phils in '79. I wonder if it is still around..God I hope so.

I love this re-writing of history. Ed Wade is an incompetent, malignant boob. He is right where he belongs: getting fleeced by the Phillies for great players like Lidge for stiffs. Thank God Gillick took over.

Are people on drugs? Ed Wade made one good trade and that was for a lazy, selfish player named Bobby Abreu. The homegrown talent wasn't Wade's doing. Gillick went out and got guys like Lidge, Moyer, Feliz, Dobbs....need I go on? Wade traded a future HOF for 4 stiffs. Gillick's smarts and Manuel's abily to relate to the players won the title.

I could not agree more in regards to Ed Wade being a boob. While he was the Phils GM he did nothing but trade for stiffs like Turk Wendell and Dennis Cook, okay. And if you think about it, Ed should be be given credit for this years team winning the wrorld seires, becasue their is no way a smart GM out ther is going to gibve up a closer like Lidge for petty mcuh nothing. So thank God for Ed Wade, the biggest boob in a GM seat.

Charlie's biggest fault has always been that people just off the boat think that their poor pronunciation is superior to that used by families, who have lived in America for many generations. Well, that's understandable, they need to feel superior to something.
