First baseman Andy Tracy’s stay with the Phillies was short-lived.

The Phillies designated him for assignment today and purchased the contract of pitcher Andrew Carpenter from Double A Reading.

Carpenter is being called up largely because the length of last night’s game leaves the bullpen thin. It seems unlikely that Clay Condrey would be available and the Phillies used everyone else. Tonight’s starter, Kyle Kendrick, ended up warming up in the 13th inning and threw about 40 pitches in the bullpen.

Carpenter is 6-8, with a 5.67 ERA in 16 games for Reading.

Tracy, 34, was back in the big leagues for the first time since 2004 when he was called up from Triple A Lehigh Valley over the weekend to replace the injured Geoff Jenkins. Tracy was batting .288 with 21 home runs and 84 RBI at Lehigh Valley.

Kyle -- throw strikes! We need my man to eat up innings, keep the ball down and keep us close against Johan.

At the beginning of Spring training I read an article about this kid and it was all good stuff. Hope he can be a success here in Sept.

Since they sent Tracy down does that mean they have reconsidered one of the other minor top picks or maybe a trade is in the wind? Gillick has been very quiet lately.

Administrative move only as Tracy should be back next week when rosters expand. Kendrick can look so good so often, then he goes out for the 6th and gets that deer in the headlights look.

Can't fault Kendrick too much last night. He threw 40 pitches the night before he was supposed to start, so add those to his pitch count in less than 24 hrs, and a sixth inning blow up is the result. Bringing up Carpenter is a good sign that we may see new faces on the roster from the minors next week, rather than letting them rot in Reading.
