Lefthander Antonio Bastardo, 23, was activated from the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Double A Reading.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated righthander Steven Register for assignment. Register is 1-3 with seven saves and a 3.20 ERA in 33 games for Lehigh Valley and appeared in one game for the Phillies this season.

Righthander Clay Condrey will continue his rehabilitation assignment on Saturday with Triple A Lehigh Valley. Condrey has been on the disabled list since July 23 with a left oblique strain.

Catcher Paul Hoover had his contract selected by the Phillies. To make room for Hoover on the 40-man roster, catcher Joel Naughton was designated for assignment.

Hoover spent the season with Triple A Lehigh Valley, where he hit .253 with 16 doubles, one home run and 28 RBI in 73 games.

Naughton, a native of Australia, batted .240 with seven home runs and 37 RBI in 82 games for Single A Clearwater this season.

I don't think I've ever seen a player in single A designated for assignment before.

All right, you know what, Kenny Junod, stop already with the wife beater references to Myers... it was never funny and is beyond old and stale at this point... move on with something constructive.

Where do the Phils get these catchers? None of them hit more than .240 and are over 30>??? The lst base and designated hitters on Lehigh are mid 30's??????? There bench is bad, bad, but they are confident in the .190 and below hitters who have trouble hitting anything other than a fasr ball.

People, the Phillies need a 3rd catcher for this time when rosters are not limited. The only other catcher on the 40 man roster was the guy in Single A. So he gets optioned and they pick up their best remaining catcher simply for an emergency so they can have Bako or Ruiz pinch hit it they so choose. It's that simple.

I know seriously. The wife beater comments people post on these blogs are ridiculous. Its not original or clever. Its so old. Its almost gotten as old as booing JD Drew when he comes Philly. I mean seriousy people? Are you really still booing him? Thats pretty sad. What happened with him was over 10yrs ago. I mean people really need to move on with their lives. And as pathetic as that is i dont think its nearly as pathetic as booing his brother just for being related to JD when he came to play here a few weeks ago. I almost have to feel sorry for people that still do that that stuff because i guess they have nothing else going on in their life to show any kind of enthusiaism for

Was Hoover's status as a "prior major leaguer" the reason he wasn't on the 40-man to begin with? Doesn't have options left, maybe? Otherwise, why was a Single-A guy on that roster anyway?

Kenny Junod: Your constant harping on the "wife beater" meme reminds me of the time Winston Churchill was at a dinner party sitting next to a Labour MP whose first name was Bessie. Churchill drank more than a bit too much that night, and Bessie complained to him, "Winston, you're drunk!" He looked at her and said, "Bessie, you're ugly, but tomorrow I'll be sober." Myers hasn't done it again, but you're still a jack@$$.

David, whatever happened to Gary Majewski? ... He pitched so well in spring training that there was talk he might even make the Opening Day Roster ... I'm surprised he was never given a look when the Phillies needed help in the back of the bullpen.

The Phils have DFA'd two Australians this week. I wonder if that's ever happened before. If a player is 19 or older when he first signs (as Naughton was), a team has to put him on the 40-man roster after four years in the organization instead of five. Naughton moved through the Phils system slowly (two full years at Lakewood after seasons in the Gulf Coast and New York Penn leagues.) They could have lost him before this season if they hadn't protected him on the 40-man roster. I guess that .663 OPS as a 23-year-old in A ball made him expendable. slow to develop. He spent two full years at Lakewood after a year each in the Gulf Coast and New York Penn leagues. The Phils had to put him on the 40-man last year or else he would have been a minor league free agent

RE: Majewski. The answer can be found on the ironpigs website: http://www.ironpigsbaseball.com/ironpigs/statistics/index.html?autoload=teamstats_pitching&team_id=1410 He's 0-5 with a 3.92 ERA and a WHIP of 1.5

majewski was 0-5 with an ERA close to 4.00 at Lehigh Valley. That's what happened to him.

Hoover's only 33. He is little young for a backup catcher in the Front Office way of thinking.

Defending a beater. I wonder if you'd be doing that if Lidge wasn't blowing all these saves. Beating your wife = worse than dogfighting.
