Phillies add 5 players

POSTED: Wednesday, February 3, 2010, 12:29 PM

The Phillies have signed five players to minor league contracts -- outfielder Freddy Guzman, righthanders J.C. Ramirez, Drew Naylor and David Herndon and lefthander Mike Zagurski.

Guzman, 29, spent last season with the Triple A affiliates of Baltimore, Seattle, Boston and the New York Yankees. In 101 games, he hit .223 with two homers and 17 RBI but stole 45 bases in 54 attempts. A switch-hitter, he has spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues with a .211 average in 47 games.

Ramirez was acquired from the Mariners in the Cliff Lee deal.

Naylor, an Australian, has been in the Phillies system after signing last February.

Herndon was acquired in the Rule IV draft at the winter meetings.

Zagurski spent last season at Clearwater and Reading as he rebounded from Tommy John surgery.

Murph, this posting isn't completely accurate. Guzman has been signed to a minor-contract, but the others are on the 40-man roster and therefore would be signed to major-league contracts with minor-league splits. It's more than a technicality since guys on straight minor-league deals need to get spots on the 40-man in order to get called up. It can cause waiver issues, keep a guy on the farm longer than he expects, or force the team to try to get a guy on the 40-man through waivers to clear a spot.

Holy Toledo. Five guys get signed to minor-league deals, probably none of 'em will make it out of Spring Training with the big club, and everyone's carrying on as if they traded away the entire starting eight for a bag of batting practice balls. Lighten up, people.

DCExpat's the only one who picked up what's going on here. The guy will be worth it with just one steal in a critical point at the end of the season. BTW, anyone see Charlie on MLB last night? He must have lost about 100#s - hardly recognize him!

But Monty, if peeps who thought they should have kept Lee moved to Seattle, the Phillies still wouldn't have Lee, so that won't solve anything...

Guzman with a .211 lifetime hitter, should give up switch hitting and bat from his strong side only. That is the adjustment that he needs make and it may give him success.

I completely agree with Monty142, only this town of ridiculous "fans" would complain about going to two straight World Series Championships, and winning one of them. All over a guy named Cliff Lee? It's so frustrating to be a Phillies fan, surrounded by these total idiots who know nothing about the game, and even less about how to support/enjoy a winning team on the field. We easily have the best team in the NL right now, I don't know what's not to love. So thank you Monty142 for ranting, we need more people like you. Go Phils!!!!!!!

What an awesome Caribbean World series for Freddie Guzman. He played really well. In one game he even sole second , third and home in one inning. Not a world shaking signing but could be a nice call up in September with speed to pinch run and be a defensive replacement -- without having to waste Ben Francisco in that role. You wont have to worry about service time, so hell definitely be a September call-up type. A detail type of signing that might help us steal a game in September without costing anything

A lot of good points made here about Guzman. I don't know that much about the minor league players, but those who are criticizing the moves Amaro has made just don't get it. He has given us RESULTS! We've gone to the WS two years in a row, winning it once. We have a darn good chance to go again this year, barring injuries, and it's going to be a fun year to watch. Reuben, Charlie, whatever decisions you make, I'm sure you know more about what you're doing than any of us posting here. I'll be behind you 100%. GO PHILS!!!
