Phillies acquire second baseman

POSTED: Monday, January 10, 2011, 12:46 PM

The Phillies acquired minor league second baseman Albert Cartwright from the Houston Astros in exchange for left-hander Sergio Escalona, who was designated for assignment over the weekend.

Cartwright, 23, split the 2010 season between Single A Lancaster and Double A Corpus Christi. He hit a combined .294 with 30 doubles, 14 triples, 10 home runs, 55 RBI and 31 stolen bases in 127 games.

A 36th-round draft choice in 2007, Cartwright has hit .272 in his minor league career with 20 home runs, 112 RBI and 71 stolen bases in 284 games.

Escalona, 26, spent last season with Double A Reading, where he went 4-8 with a 3.81 ERA in 50 games. He had 53 strikeouts in 54.1 innings. He appeared in 14 games with the Phillies in 2009.

The Phillies had 10 days to trade, release Escalona or put him on waivers.

I guess it's better than just losing Escalona for nothing.

When in doubt, give Ed Wade a call...

Cartwright actually sounds like a legit prospect for the bench. Good old Ed Wade. It's nice to finally be on the other side of his trades.

Knowing Wade's track record, Cartwright is destined to be an all-star.

Your first thought when you see what we got is "Meaningless trade, we were losing Escalona anyway so why not get a warm body back." But then you factor in Ed Wade and you think - Wow in 2 years when Polly retires we can move Utley to 3rd cuz this Cartwright character will likely be a .300 hitting gold glover by then! Yippeeee!

Ed Wade, the insufferable boob, again keeping the Phils happy. Let's pray to almighty God that they don't fall for it when he gets fired.

And to boot Chris "Wheels" Wheeler says he's a "great guy in the clubhouse."

How could anyone suggest putting Utley on third. He can barely get the ball to Howard from 30 feet away. Not to mention he will be thinking legacy and his numbers at third don't look nearly as impressive. I expect that at some point he will start spending time at first. But, not for a long time.

For this upcoming year, this trade means nothing.

Ahh, I was wondering what ever happened to the fourth Cartwright brother with the passing of Adam, Hoss and Little Joe. Now I know.
