The Phillies had the third-highest payroll in baseball in 2010, according to information received by clubs from the commissioner's office and obtained by the Associated Press.
The figures are for 40-man rosters and include salaries and pro-rated shares of signing bonuses, earned incentive bonuses, non-cash compensation, buyouts of unexercised options and cash transactions, according to the AP.
The Phillies' total is $145,539,931. Only the Yankees at $215,053,064 and Boston at $170,650,856 had higher payrolls. Both teams had to pay the luxury tax.
The commissioner’s office computed the average salary at $2,932,162, up 1.7 percent from last year’s $2,882,336. The players’ association, which uses a slightly different method, pegged the average at $3,014,572 last week, up 0.6 percent from $2,996,106.

If San Diego, Pittsburgh and Florida are not going to pay competitive major league salaries, they should become minor league cities. I am tired of hearing about the Yankees paying to much money. The focus should be on the bottom feeders that do not care about putting a decent team on the field. PortCity- Wasn't San Diego right there till the last 2 games? Doesn't the Padres have the best bullpen in baseball? Not bad for being at the bottom..

I'm so glad I'm a fan of a big market team that spends. I'm not the type that can switch favorite teams, i.e. band wagoners, therfore if I was a Royals or Pirates fan I'd probably lose interest in baseball. To the bottom feeders, it's just a business, and with revenue sharing they just want to make a buck and not put it back into the team. ronin32- Kudos to the Phils owners for reinvesting in the team. They could have started squirreling away some bigtime profits during these glory years but to go out and add Halladay,OZ and Cliff Lee. Unbelievable. argonne
- Wow, there are two teams cheaper than the Marlins in the Padres and the Pirates. At least San Diego is a nice venue to play in Southern California, but it is nice to see the Pirates reduced to rubble after the 70's rivalries with the Phillies. Lets keep selling out the Park, and keep our team in WS contention, and the owners spending for that team. Go Phillies!!
The Phillies are awesome to give back to the great fans of Philly such a fantastic team.
They are rewarding us for our constant sellouts and merchandice purchases Bob65S
wow the 6ers are disgusting. They lost by like 50 tonight to a Bulls team without Noah. Thank God for the Phils. ronin32

You know, I understand the criticism about the bottom-feeding payroll teams, but look at the records of Florida and San Diego in the last 5 years and compare it with the record of Pittsburgh in the same span. the first two still manage to put out halfway respectable teams with fleeting moments of contention. Why can't the Pirates at least get this much? Money makes a big difference, to be sure, but there is something else the Pirates are missing there. KSholly
Yet that "bottom feeder Florida" has 2 World Series in the past 13 years. JonKap
The Pirates have one of the nicest stadiums in MLB. That part of the formula is in place, too bad the team is not competitive. Beck
2 Cys and 2 guys = BIG buys NewMick314- Revenue sharing is baseball socialism. There are too many teams and it is time for contraction.
