The Phillies signed their first pick in the June draft, outfielder Larry Greene, before today's midnight deadline.

Greene, from Berrian County High in Georgia, was selected with the 39th overall pick, which the Phillies received as compensation for losing Jayson Werth to Washington.

A solid 6-2, 235, Greene is noted for his raw power and has been described as a "physical beast." He hit .562 with 19 home runs and 52 RBI as a senior.

According to Baseball America, he received a $1 million bonus, the highest bonus paid this year outside the first round.

The Phillies have a number of unsigned picks; the highest is second-rounder Roman Quinn, a high school shortstop from Port St. Joe, Fla., who was selected 66th overall.

The Phillies formally announced the signing of righthander Dave Bush to a minor league contract after he passed his physical. Bush will report to Triple A Lehigh Valley.

Bush, 31, began the season with the Texas Rangers and went 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 17 games (three starts) before being released on July 6. He then signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs and made five starts for triple-A Iowa (1-2, 6.14 ERA). In three of his five starts with Iowa, Bush posted a 1.98 ERA (3 ER, 13.2 IP).

Originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the second round of the 2002 draft, Bush has a career record of 46-69 with a 4.70 ERA in 210 games (187 starts) for Toronto (2004-05), the Milwaukee Brewers (2006-10) and Texas.
