Phillies sign Podsednik to minor league deal
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
The Phillies have signed former stolen base champ Scott Podsednik to a minor league deal, according to Fox Sport's Ken Rosenthal.
Podsednik had a solid season last year for the Royals and Dodgers, hitting .297/.342/.382 with 35 steals in 595 plate appearances. He was much better in Kansas City than he was in Los Angeles. Podsednik has played all three outfield positions, although the majority of his playing time has come in left field and center field.
Podsednik was hitting .254/.365/.352 with three steals in 85 plate appearances in the Blue Jays' minor league system. Toronto released Podsednik, who battled planta fasciitis in spring training.
Podsednik gives the Phillies depth, particularly at center field, where Shane Victorino is currently on the disabled list.

Ex White Sox players seem to do well here. jjpwharris

very good, no risk pick up TheLon
ChiSox fleeced Phils a few years back with Freddie Garcia for Gavin Floyd. albrock
Has a REALLY hot wife. dasher
the guy in AAA is the same exact player with 17 steals without getting caught...stop it already with the retreads....this brass is so desperate now...totally drafted way to many pitching prospects and track athlete position players....use our boat load of minor league pitching prospects to acquire highly rated position players from other organizations that will be forever "blocked" from making it to the bigs....Just like a Jared Cozart or JC Ramirez will be blocked by the Lees, Halladay's and Hamels. bearsfriend- the guy you're talking about in AAA is 32 years old ... he's played 12 years in the minors for four organizations. Are you really complaining that he might be "blocked" by a former big league all star and stolen base champ whose 2010 stats were nearly identical to Placido Polanco's? That's goofy.

So does this mean Shane is out longer than we think? jpgulli

Free hot dogs for first 50 fans who spell his name right. NewMick314- Also it's plantar fasciitis, not planta.
Great pcikup, but Idon't see how they can get him onto the roster without another injury. They should somehow, and get him into the leadoff spot immediately. This can guy turn walks/singles into triples and doubles. Getting rid of Ibanez would be the best thing, or the other option is to send Mayberry down. carlosbeltran
Romero has a case of controlitis erraticus. Disco Dave- LOL!!!

By reading posts on here, people need some lessons in the English language!!!! The ghetto talk is pretty damn stupid in an ADULT forum. Take it to kiddie city with all the other bad arse wanna be's twpman- I don't care how anyone talks/writes on here as long as they have something relevant to contribute.
On another note, it's a good insurance policy should we lose another outfielder. JeffHink
I like it. The guys that were mentioned this morning would have cost some of the minor leaguers. This was no cost, with potential upside. P Even
I don't get the negative comments...he was signed to a minor league deal, if Victorino gets healthy, Podsednik will be spending the whole summer in Allentown. No risk move, probably prompted by the Phils having to call up Brown, a corner OF, when they really wanted to call up a CF and didn't have one. drbob1
I like him! The Sherm
At least I heard of him before... Philly Fan in Kuwait
I am so glad to hear they signed Scott Posednik, I am a huge fan of his and I'm telling you he is a player who knows how to get on base and score runs. He gives 100% all the time and totally deserves to be on a ML roster. BCRock- Just how many left handed hitting outfielders do the Phillies need?
A LH bat but can't complain. If he's in good health and the plantar fasciitis is resolved maybe he can help Ibanez to his well-deserved spot on the bench. Bob1
I think this means we're losing patience with Francisco, Mayberry and Ibanez. We bring in Posednik, let his foot heal before the trading deadline, and it gives us the option of including Mayberry or Francisco in a trade package. I'm presuming Martinez is gone when Victorino gets activated. Posednik would make a respectable No. 2 hitter, unlike Valdez and Martinez right now. I know Chase is coming back Monday; still, you never know if Shane or Jimmy will go down again. eman
Need more LH bats in the linuep, yes we do.
But injuries are likely to continue and veteran presences in minors ready to join pennant race, that's ok. Will mgmnt be willing to sit Raul and his $$$ like SF did with Rowand last year? For the team?
Interesting times ahead. Eephus
maybe he turns into for the Phillies what Pat Burrell turned into for the Giants...(sure wish the Phillies had grabbed Burrell when he was available last year) danielboyer
Scott Posednik is a gamer. I'd rather have him come off the bench to pinch hit than today's attempt with Chooch (for Mayberry, no less!) Now, can we bring Posednik up quickly and banish Herndon to somewhere, anywhere please. Well, okay, Dannys Baez and Herndon! VANDERGRAAFK
Interesting, solid signing... PhilliefaninAZ
I like it. I'll like it even more if they use an OF of Podsednik, Victorino, and Brown/Mayberry, with Ibanez and Francisco playing for the Bridgeport Bluefish. mikemimbs
Podsednik. Where's my hot dogs? I say stay with Mayberry and see what he can do in the long run. Herndon, Baez, need to go bye byes. georgekissel
A white guy who steals? Powelton villager
White Sox fleeced Phills with even better Gio Gonzalez. GG pitched yesterday 7 inngs 1 earned run no decision 2.20 ERA. Gillick can stay home and polish his HOF trophy. If you are an over the top Phill fan (like me) you will get sick watching his breaking ball. He would make it 5 aces. Don w
I like this move. He is the kind of player they need at this point since this isnt a bash team any longer I would bring him today and let him start in front of Ibanez or against RH handed bats and alternate with Mayberry in CF until Shane gets back df- This story got a lot of attention here... Boredom???
- Some Mid-Spring cleaning: time to get rid of Romero, Ibanez, Francisco, Baez, Wheels, Sarge, and McCarthy! Seegs
- Re Wheels . . . God, pls. make Seegs dream come true!!!!

Comment removed.- Significant. Signing Podsednik means Phils either : 1) Are more concerned re Shane's health than they're admitting, and/or 2) Have doubts with one or more OFers on the club, take your pick : Mayberry, BenFran, Ibanez, Brown. One of those may be on the move.
Just good, cheap insurance.
Nothing to get all excited about. wordsword
