Phillies reportedly add Joel Pineiro
Daily News staff
The Philles have agreed to a minor league contract with righthander Joel Pineiro, according to a report.
The contract includes an invitation to big-league spring training, ESPN.com reported.
Pineiro, 33, went 7-7 with a 5.13 ERA last season in 27 games, including 24 starts, with the Angels. He spent part of the season on the disabled list with shoulder tightness.
He signed a 2-year, $16 million contract with the Angels before the 2010 season. He has previously pitched for Seattle, Boston and St. Louis.
Pineiro made his major league debut with the Mariners in Pat Gillick’s first season with the club as general manager.
His career record is 104-93, with a 4.42 ERA.
Pineiro does have some experience in the bullpen, but the Phillies presumably would be looking for depth behind their starting rotation.
