Phillies reportedly add Joel Pineiro

POSTED: Sunday, January 15, 2012, 5:20 PM

The Philles have agreed to a minor league contract with righthander Joel Pineiro, according to a report.

The contract includes an invitation to big-league spring training, ESPN.com reported.

Pineiro, 33, went 7-7 with a 5.13 ERA last season in 27 games, including 24 starts, with the Angels. He spent part of the season on the disabled list with shoulder tightness.

He signed a 2-year, $16 million contract with the Angels before the 2010 season. He has previously pitched for Seattle, Boston and St. Louis.

Pineiro made his major league debut with the Mariners in Pat Gillick’s first season with the club as general manager.

His career record is 104-93, with a 4.42 ERA.

Pineiro does have some experience in the bullpen, but the Phillies presumably would be looking for depth behind their starting rotation.

The problem with Joel was his inability to get his sinker to "sink" out here in Calif. There is NO RISK folks in a minor league contract. IF he can get back to controlling the sinker, he could add insurance if Blanton/Worley/Kendrick can't hold the 4/5 spot well. What I simply do not understand is why the negative comments about a minor league contract for a potential low risk pitcher. Its amazing how some of you simply do not understand what it takes to keep a majore league team highly competative. With all the negative comments, you'd think these Phillies haven't seen the postseason in the past 5 seasons. Get a grip folks....just about a month til pitchers/catchers report.

Take a deep breath, put your hands up and step away from that keybord. Pineiro on a minor league deal is inconsequential. He knows retirement is looming and wants a shot at a team that could win it all. A team like ours. Will he stick? Unlikely, but Pineiro and the Phillies make good dance partners, in January. Rock on.

Piniero at best probably will be an "innings eater" for Lehigh Valley. I think it's a non-event for the Phillies, whose major concern has to be the declining production of its highly-paid, declining-production position players. I do like the idea of moving Wheels to Lehigh Valley along with TMac, who could supplement his income by hawking used Kias for the local car dealership. Then maybe Larry Anderson and Scott Frantske could move over to the TV broadcast.

He used to be good, might be good again. If not, what did you lose?

To hear the pundits, one would think the Phillies finished last. All the dumbness about what the color man says during the game, What pray tell, would you like him to talk about ? Dead air space doesn't sell tickets. If you like silence, turn the volume down.
The range of stupidity here, starts with Amaro, Manuel, Gross, Dubee, and the color commentator. The last I saw was all of them are connected to a winning team. Enjoy it. It's a good time to be a Phillies fan.
Years ago players shunned the Phillies because of their lack of dedication to winning. Now there are players who want to play for the Phillies. In about 5 weeks catchers and pitchers will descend on Florida to prepare for the up coming season . Things could improve in a month or two.

I believe this signing is insurance in case Joe Blanton turns out to be a bust coming back from injury. With the high expectations for the Phillies, this signing is needed. Otherwise, the excess pitcher could be a trading chip at the trading deadline if necessary.

Good posts by everyone but Piniero is nothing more than another arm for the pen or AAA. The real questions are:
    1. Why has RAJ not signed Hamels longterm
    2. Why did we not upgrade 3B...A.Ramirez this year and A.Beltre last year
    3. Wouldn't Ryan Theriot be an upgrade over Wilson Valdez

Another bargain bin retread signed on the cheap. Why don't the Philies just go directly to the hospital and sign pitchers coming out of surgery.

They got Blanton coming back from arm problems, Contreras coming back from arm problems, Lidge possibly coming back from arm problems, Antonio Bastardo who had arm problems late in the season, to go with Kyle Kendrick, David Hearndon, and Dontrelle Willis that have had consistentcy problems. Look forward to another first round playoff dive this year if they even make it!

As a low-cost, low-risk insurance policy, Pinero is a good one. Starting pitchers go down all the time. It's smart to have a little veteran insurance in the minors.

I don't understand all of the RAJ haters on this low cost-minor league signing. You can never have enough old, young, or in between pitchers who have major league experience. Pinero is insurance in case Worley, Blanton, Stutes, Willis, or Contreras doesn't stay healthy. At the very least, he makes the Iron Pigs stronger.

yes inconsequential deal-- problem is NOT that they got Pineiro (or Willis for that matter)..problem is what they did NOT do -- all these meaningless bullpen and bench deals for low-cost garbage generally result in useless garbage (see,e.g. Baez, Schneider, Bruntlett, Herdon, Gload, etc) and Amaro has still failed to improve offense, bench and bullpen in 3 1/2 yrs - an intelligent g.m. does NOT max out his budget (as UncleStosh is correct on this score) by putting ALL his reliever budget into a single overrated and overpaid closer but instead gets multiple quality relivrs .. an intelligent g.m. does not put all his "offense" budget into a non-slugging so-called slugging 1st baseman with the rest of the offensive positions at best avg or below avg offensively and then can't afford a decent hitting 3rd baseman or any real quality on the bench, and major q's in the bullpen ... yes a team can get to the post-season just on the strength of its starting pitchign but the Amaro method is 0 for 3 in October and i doubt the numbers will improve as the team is actually getting worse---meanwhile he has also squandered the Phils quality prospcts in his reckless manner of overspending for a few players, trading away all his prospects, while neglecting depth, balance, bench and bullpen ,etc and the proof is in the pudding as he has never won squat

Dudeskins - just remember who you are speaking of: the awe-inspiring, all-knowing, all-seeing warbiscuit. He speaks from the Mt. Olympus of moronica. We should be thankful as he sees all the bad and keeps us from getting too optimistic - right, warbiscuit? Oh, that's right, you speak only to the other deities of pessimism.
