Phillies release Mathieson

POSTED: Tuesday, November 29, 2011, 2:35 PM

The Phillies have released righthander Scott Mathieson to allow him to pursue an opportunity with a professional team in Asia, the team announced in a news release.

Mathieson, who has had two Tommy John surgeries, reportedly has signed with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Central League, according to reports. The contract is for $2 million with incentives.

Mathieson, 27, will be given the opportunity to be the team's closer with Yuya Kubo sidelined by injury, according to reports in Japan.

Mathieson, posted a 1-4 record with a 6.75 ERA in 15 major league games (8 starts) over three seasons with the Phillies (2006, 2010-11).

A 17th-round selection by the Phillies in the June 2002 draft, Mathieson went 32-37 with a 3.75 ERA and 34 saves in 200 games (96 starts) for his minor league career.

With the transaction, the Phillies now have 39 players on the 40-man roster.

No major league team wants him on its roster the day his arm falls off. I don't believe anybody has had three Tommy Johns.

When Scott was up with the Phils this past year, they hardly gave him a chance. He'd pitch an inning, then sit in the 'pen for a week. He pitched in a few games and had an ERA of 0.00, lowest on the team this past year! They also jerked him around between a starter and reliever. I wish him luck in Japan. He can make some $ and hopefully come back to the States and play for an MLB team.

B-friend, I believe Gordon pitched in SKorea not Japan. Much different culture.

Get something for him?!? If there was any interest in this dude, do you really think he would be going to Japan? Truth is the guy isn't very good - yes he can throw hard, but with no movement whatsoever and terrible location (right down the middle). He's not a major league pitcher - if he was, he would be on the phils already because they need bullpen arms.

High octane, flat fastball and nothing else. Hope he learns to pitch in Japan.

Hmm..2 million bucks is more than he'll ever make in the Phillies organization. May as well take the money and run.

Bottom line, under Cholly and Dubee, young pitchers have to pitch like Koufax and Gibson to have a chance.

j-ritch, I know how to read. I got that part. How do you know he was shopped around? Unless you have inside information or a crystal ball, you can't say that. They waited for this kid after he got hurt for almost two years, and as Dull pointed out, he had 26 saves in 2010 and hit 99 once in a while. And all of a sudden they let him go? The Cards Motte didn't become a bonafide reliever until this year. And how old is he? How about Ryan Franklin? I don't understand why they asked Billy Wagner, a guy who chose the Mets over us, then bounced around a little bit and retired, to come back and brought back all those aging players and released this young reliever. Sometimes players need a chance. Ask Delmon Young, Nelson Cruz and Alex Gordon. As Mark1pnt pointed out, unless there is a provision that he can't sign with any other team, which I don't think is the case because he was released, this doesn't make a lot of sense to me. And that's my opinion.

Its amazing he could throw at all after 2 tommy johns. But a fast fastball isn't enough for the bigs, especially when it is fat and strait. He is heading to Asia to make some money while he can still play. Best of luck to him, he showed great drive to come back from adversity.

I liked Scott, I really did....but every time he was given an opportunity at the ML level he didn't perform. He had the arm....you have to wonder was there a brain attached or maybe no heart? You have to have a certain level of aggression to survive and succeed at that level, maybe that was lacking. There's no denying the guy had a good work ethic and drive, but sometimes that's not enough. I suspect his options in the states were nil, hence the move to Japan or Korea...he can still make some money there. I suspect he was released under the conditon that he can't sign with anyone in America, lest the Phils get something for him in return.

good post...If I would've read it, I wouldn't have posted something something so similar!...Guess he found out from Brian Gordon the lifestyle there isn't so tough.

I don't understand this move either. We bring back Thome and Schneider, sign Wiggington, offer Raul arbitration and let Mathieson go. At least get something for him.

Can't you read? He was released to pursue an opportunity in Asia. Which means he was already shopped and we couldn't get anything for him. What more do you want? Maybe we could get a couple fortune cookies for him.

Everytime he pitched in Philly they rippied his weak stuff all over the park.

Rule 5 pick-up here we come. Space available. The next David Herndon, the next Michael Martinez...but maybe the next Shane Vic.

They are on an unprotected pitcher named Terry Doyle out of the White Sox system...flashed in Arizona...throws slop.

Very Disapointing. Rich Dubee may be more of a problem than an asset at this point. Too much power, been there too long. He doesn't like Kendrick either and all that guy does is win 10 games a year while being dissed throughout.

Hard to believe that a guy that could hit 99 mph on a AAA radar gun and had 26 saves as recently as 2010 was never given much of a chance to find a place in a MLB bullpen.

Manuel had absolutely no confidence in him as he did not show any command in his short stays with the big club...He does have a high octane fastball, but if he can't spot those secondary pitches (got better this past season as a starter)...then that high 90;s heater that catches too much of the plate will get hit in the bigs...Wouldn't be surprised to see him re-surface in the majors down the line, let him make some money.

I like Mathieson but bearsfriend is correct. If you recall, he had one trip up where he could barely throw a strike. Good for him making some money in Japan.

Going into 2011 I really thought Mathieson had a shot at making the bullpen but he never showed anything when he was given a shot.

It appears that Amaro, JR is getting ready to make another free agent move or bring someone by trading minor players. I wonder which move he plans to make?

The Tonner still doesn't know what Bowker is doing on the 40-man. Can someone please explain it?
