Phillies release Mathieson

The Phillies have released righthander Scott Mathieson to allow him to pursue an opportunity with a professional team in Asia, the team announced in a news release.
Mathieson, who has had two Tommy John surgeries, reportedly has signed with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Central League, according to reports. The contract is for $2 million with incentives.
Mathieson, 27, will be given the opportunity to be the team's closer with Yuya Kubo sidelined by injury, according to reports in Japan.
Mathieson, posted a 1-4 record with a 6.75 ERA in 15 major league games (8 starts) over three seasons with the Phillies (2006, 2010-11).
A 17th-round selection by the Phillies in the June 2002 draft, Mathieson went 32-37 with a 3.75 ERA and 34 saves in 200 games (96 starts) for his minor league career.
With the transaction, the Phillies now have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
Its amazing he could throw at all after 2 tommy johns. But a fast fastball isn't enough for the bigs, especially when it is fat and strait. He is heading to Asia to make some money while he can still play. Best of luck to him, he showed great drive to come back from adversity. Sidewinder7
j-ritch, I know how to read. I got that part. How do you know he was shopped around? Unless you have inside information or a crystal ball, you can't say that. They waited for this kid after he got hurt for almost two years, and as Dull pointed out, he had 26 saves in 2010 and hit 99 once in a while. And all of a sudden they let him go? The Cards Motte didn't become a bonafide reliever until this year. And how old is he? How about Ryan Franklin? I don't understand why they asked Billy Wagner, a guy who chose the Mets over us, then bounced around a little bit and retired, to come back and brought back all those aging players and released this young reliever. Sometimes players need a chance. Ask Delmon Young, Nelson Cruz and Alex Gordon. As Mark1pnt pointed out, unless there is a provision that he can't sign with any other team, which I don't think is the case because he was released, this doesn't make a lot of sense to me. And that's my opinion. EL Zorro
Bottom line, under Cholly and Dubee, young pitchers have to pitch like Koufax and Gibson to have a chance. EL Zorro- Agreed.

Hmm..2 million bucks is more than he'll ever make in the Phillies organization. May as well take the money and run. SteveS11
High octane, flat fastball and nothing else. Hope he learns to pitch in Japan. Dragon13
Get something for him?!? If there was any interest in this dude, do you really think he would be going to Japan? Truth is the guy isn't very good - yes he can throw hard, but with no movement whatsoever and terrible location (right down the middle). He's not a major league pitcher - if he was, he would be on the phils already because they need bullpen arms. CosmoK
B-friend, I believe Gordon pitched in SKorea not Japan. Much different culture.

When Scott was up with the Phils this past year, they hardly gave him a chance. He'd pitch an inning, then sit in the 'pen for a week. He pitched in a few games and had an ERA of 0.00, lowest on the team this past year! They also jerked him around between a starter and reliever. I wish him luck in Japan. He can make some $ and hopefully come back to the States and play for an MLB team. SEEK313
No major league team wants him on its roster the day his arm falls off. I don't believe anybody has had three Tommy Johns. orange rhino
