Phillies recall Zagurski
Daily News staff
The Phillies have recalled lefthander Mike Zagurski from Triple A Lehigh Valley to take the roster spot of Vance Worley, who was sent down yesterday.
Zagurski was 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA, 9 saves and 23 strikeouts in 14.1 innings.
He pitched in two games with the Phillies in April.
Worley turned in two strong starts after Joe Blanton (elbow) went on the disabled list in late-April, holding the Mets to two hits in six scoreless innings and the Nationals to four hits and one run in six innings. His combined numbers in those two starts - 12 innings, six hits, four walks, 12 strikeouts, one run - were impressive. But Blanton returned, forcing Worley to the bullpen. After two appearances as a reliever - he pitched a scoreless inning in one outing and allowed a run, two walks and two hits in three innings in another - the Phillies sent him back down to Lehigh Valley.
Worley started just once for the IronPigs before Blanton went back on the disabled list, opening the door for his return to the big-league roster. But he struggled with his command in starts against the Reds and the Mets, walking four in eight innings and throwing 94 of 164 pitches for strikes.
In a 9-5 loss to New York on Sunday, he allowed eight runs, five earned, on 12 hits with one strikeout in three innings.

I recall Zagurski too...I recall that he is bad and fat. Curse of Billy Penn
stocking AAAA pitchers??? Halladay, Lee, Hamels, Oswalt, Madson, Contreras, Bastardo, Stutes....um, are you serious? tremo12
Haven't seen any promise from Zagurski yet....Not to much more of an upgrade over Romero... PhilliefaninAZ
Not sure Zagurski will ever make with the big club. By the way, anyone else watching the game tonight the least bit curious as to how Danny Espinosa can hit a ball off the end of the bat that far...twice?? Corked bat, maybe??? Just sayin'. doug1834
His splits against LHs isn't good or when he gets behind he grooves it. alwaysphil1
Zagurski had a good spring training and has shown that he is recovered from elbow injuries. It's not as if he's been a colossal bust. Give the guy a real chance. philsfarm
@tsoprano:
While Zagurski may not be able to cut it with the Phillies, take a look at his LV stats and tell us again why he don't even belong in the minors. Then tell us why anybody should pay any attention to your opinions about the Phillies. judas_priest
Almost forgot...didn't JC say that Ozwalt checked him out and fixed his problem in about 10 seconds? something about rushing his delivery and his shoulder flying open and his gum getting caught in his dentures? If Roy has found the problem, all this JC crucifying could be moot! Eephus
rvb thanks for the afternoon laugh, reminding us of that nutty guy. Zagnut is back. Vance needs to re focus...who was it on this board who called him "The Bird" another chuckle for anyone old enough to remember Fidrych's short but entertaining career. Eephus
I want the Phils to trade for the guy from the Nats Coffey. Watching that fat man run in full sprint from the pen to the mound would be worth season tickets alone... rvb2321
Hasn't he failed every time he comes up?????????? shawnmac
Just wait until big Zagurski starts sending the baters to ZZZZZZZZZZZ land and all you haters will love him you bunch of front runners.Ohhh and Sewellmat thats a very racist comment you just maid. morron! Phillies08
The best team in baseball doesn't care what fanboys and armchair managers think -- thankfully. jpk
HR numbers for the bullpen are down and they need someone to give up the long ball. Zags excells in that role. Dave34
The original JC made the ultimate sacrifice for the good of mankind. The current JC needs to take the Phall Pfor the Phils NewMick314
I usually enjoy bashing the fat and lazy Zagurski because of his willingness to throw away a potential career in the majors because of his inability to pass on the cheesesteaks and ice cream. That beinng said I've had enough of Romero and his latino jig after every pitch, the gum chewing and head shaking after leaving the team in worse shape than when he came in. And then he says last week that he's only had 1 bad outing and I think charlie read them quotes and maybe has had enough. Thanks for 2008 when you sacrificed years of your life to roid up and get a ring, but those days are over and so are you JC. do that little jig of yours right out the door. I hear the Mets just love monkey clowns like you. Sewellmatt
Can philly.com take the sound off these ads? I'm looking at less and less articles just because I can't stand them. chief_jaysons
Show some love for the "Z-Man"!!! scorpio27
Remember, Romero was not supposed to be part of the plan for this season. He was basically their last LH option once the Reyes deal fell through. At that point, no one better was left.
And why not give Z a chance to replace him? I mean, it's not like he is going to be any worse, but if he works out better it's a win.
The 'pen has been absolutely phenomenal this season. Even Baez has been productive in most of his outings.
As CosmoK just said, you've got a clear top 4. The only question is when/how/if they'll be able to work Lidge in there. sicarius
I think he's in better shape than Worley at least. That's the rumor in the minors, anyway... MFPhils- With the upcoming schedule, now's a good time to give Zagurski another look. He has failed in the majors before but he's been pitching well at Lehigh so he deserves a look. If nothing else, maybe it lights a fire under JC "Walk Machine" Romero. I've always felt Zagurski could be a serviceable lefty specialist with Bastardo being the primary lefty reliever.
They're short on left-handed relievers. Romero was a last resort signing. This is an area I could see a trade addressing. s
All this negative talk, i almost forgot that the Phillies have one of the best bullpens in the league. They're 3rd statistically in the majors, but the way things have shaped up, they have a very strong back end. Stutes-Bastardo-Contrares-Madson, I'm pretty happy with that group. the rest of these guys are just filler. CosmoK- Zagurski flat out sucks and should not even be pitching minor league ball for the phillies tsoprano
We'll see where we stand "after" the trade deadline, just sayin'... DJ
Zagursky will get one outing to show he is not major league material. Romero should never have been resigned. eaglesman1
with the way J C is playing this move needs to be done...if baby kruk doesnt work out, this is the likely area the phillies will adress before the july 31 trade deadline danielboyer
Romero stinks, but Zagurski doesn't look like much of an upgrade. The Phils seem to be good at stocking AAAA pitchers. paolibulldog
Isn't the goal to win games and field the best team possible? All Zagurski does is give up hits. He's a fat, pasty, white Romero, except he gives up hits instead of walks. homerjay99
Zagurski stinks. He gets to 0-2 on every batter and then walks him, or gives up a hit. It's a sad state of affairs when you can't find a single decent lefty specialist. dblankj
Zagurski has proven that he can't pitch at the major league level. Not yet, anyway. They're going with three lefties in the bullpen now?
Or is this a prelude to cutting bait with Romero? Also seems to indicate that Kendrick will be the 5th starter until further notice. SteveS11
Fact of the matter is, LH relief pitching buys you a lot of years in the bigs....even if you stink you can hang around a long time....JC may not be as done as you all have him made out to be.....nice to see Z get a chance though..... Mark1npt
JC=Gone any time now.. drbob1
Drop Romero when Worley comes back. Keep Zagurski as the other leftie. Move Michael Martinez when Victorino comes back! Bill S
Baby Kruk is back, nice. If Z eventually replaces Romero as the 2nd lefty then all we then need is Lidge to replace Biaz, then a minor league to replace Lidge. Id rid us of Lidge right now but since they wont ill take it in that order. FMBNG
Mike Zagurski. What's the point? dasher
JC better run to the GNC. His days are numbered.
Joe Lis lives- I thought the same thing.
PhightinPhil
Agree with Koons, JC is a goner. Wouldn't surprise me if the Phils have a trade brewing. They have a surplus of outfielders. Servo
Worley will be back and it almost appears with Mike Z here, the JC is not long for the Staff. Koons- "Bronco" Zagurski is back. Hope he beans Werth.
