The Phillies have recalled lefthander Mike Zagurski from Triple A Lehigh Valley to take the roster spot of Vance Worley, who was sent down yesterday.

Zagurski was 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA, 9 saves and 23 strikeouts in 14.1 innings.

He pitched in two games with the Phillies in April.

Worley turned in two strong starts after Joe Blanton (elbow) went on the disabled list in late-April, holding the Mets to two hits in six scoreless innings and the Nationals to four hits and one run in six innings. His combined numbers in those two starts - 12 innings, six hits, four walks, 12 strikeouts, one run - were impressive. But Blanton returned, forcing Worley to the bullpen. After two appearances as a reliever - he pitched a scoreless inning in one outing and allowed a run, two walks and two hits in three innings in another - the Phillies sent him back down to Lehigh Valley.

Worley started just once for the IronPigs before Blanton went back on the disabled list, opening the door for his return to the big-league roster. But he struggled with his command in starts against the Reds and the Mets, walking four in eight innings and throwing 94 of 164 pitches for strikes.

In a 9-5 loss to New York on Sunday, he allowed eight runs, five earned, on 12 hits with one strikeout in three innings.

Worley will be back and it almost appears with Mike Z here, the JC is not long for the Staff.

Agree with Koons, JC is a goner. Wouldn't surprise me if the Phils have a trade brewing. They have a surplus of outfielders.

JC better run to the GNC. His days are numbered.

Baby Kruk is back, nice. If Z eventually replaces Romero as the 2nd lefty then all we then need is Lidge to replace Biaz, then a minor league to replace Lidge. Id rid us of Lidge right now but since they wont ill take it in that order.

Drop Romero when Worley comes back. Keep Zagurski as the other leftie. Move Michael Martinez when Victorino comes back!

Fact of the matter is, LH relief pitching buys you a lot of years in the bigs....even if you stink you can hang around a long time....JC may not be as done as you all have him made out to be.....nice to see Z get a chance though.....

Zagurski has proven that he can't pitch at the major league level. Not yet, anyway. They're going with three lefties in the bullpen now?
Or is this a prelude to cutting bait with Romero? Also seems to indicate that Kendrick will be the 5th starter until further notice.

Zagurski stinks. He gets to 0-2 on every batter and then walks him, or gives up a hit. It's a sad state of affairs when you can't find a single decent lefty specialist.

Isn't the goal to win games and field the best team possible? All Zagurski does is give up hits. He's a fat, pasty, white Romero, except he gives up hits instead of walks.

Romero stinks, but Zagurski doesn't look like much of an upgrade. The Phils seem to be good at stocking AAAA pitchers.

with the way J C is playing this move needs to be done...if baby kruk doesnt work out, this is the likely area the phillies will adress before the july 31 trade deadline
