The Phillies have recalled lefthander Mike Zagurski from Triple A Lehigh Valley to take the roster spot of Vance Worley, who was sent down yesterday.

Zagurski was 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA, 9 saves and 23 strikeouts in 14.1 innings.

He pitched in two games with the Phillies in April.

Worley turned in two strong starts after Joe Blanton (elbow) went on the disabled list in late-April, holding the Mets to two hits in six scoreless innings and the Nationals to four hits and one run in six innings. His combined numbers in those two starts - 12 innings, six hits, four walks, 12 strikeouts, one run - were impressive. But Blanton returned, forcing Worley to the bullpen. After two appearances as a reliever - he pitched a scoreless inning in one outing and allowed a run, two walks and two hits in three innings in another - the Phillies sent him back down to Lehigh Valley.

Worley started just once for the IronPigs before Blanton went back on the disabled list, opening the door for his return to the big-league roster. But he struggled with his command in starts against the Reds and the Mets, walking four in eight innings and throwing 94 of 164 pitches for strikes.

In a 9-5 loss to New York on Sunday, he allowed eight runs, five earned, on 12 hits with one strikeout in three innings.

Zagursky will get one outing to show he is not major league material. Romero should never have been resigned.

Zagurski flat out sucks and should not even be pitching minor league ball for the phillies

All this negative talk, i almost forgot that the Phillies have one of the best bullpens in the league. They're 3rd statistically in the majors, but the way things have shaped up, they have a very strong back end. Stutes-Bastardo-Contrares-Madson, I'm pretty happy with that group. the rest of these guys are just filler.

With the upcoming schedule, now's a good time to give Zagurski another look. He has failed in the majors before but he's been pitching well at Lehigh so he deserves a look. If nothing else, maybe it lights a fire under JC "Walk Machine" Romero. I've always felt Zagurski could be a serviceable lefty specialist with Bastardo being the primary lefty reliever.

They're short on left-handed relievers. Romero was a last resort signing. This is an area I could see a trade addressing.

I think he's in better shape than Worley at least. That's the rumor in the minors, anyway...

Remember, Romero was not supposed to be part of the plan for this season. He was basically their last LH option once the Reyes deal fell through. At that point, no one better was left.
And why not give Z a chance to replace him? I mean, it's not like he is going to be any worse, but if he works out better it's a win.
The 'pen has been absolutely phenomenal this season. Even Baez has been productive in most of his outings.
As CosmoK just said, you've got a clear top 4. The only question is when/how/if they'll be able to work Lidge in there.

Can philly.com take the sound off these ads? I'm looking at less and less articles just because I can't stand them.

I usually enjoy bashing the fat and lazy Zagurski because of his willingness to throw away a potential career in the majors because of his inability to pass on the cheesesteaks and ice cream. That beinng said I've had enough of Romero and his latino jig after every pitch, the gum chewing and head shaking after leaving the team in worse shape than when he came in. And then he says last week that he's only had 1 bad outing and I think charlie read them quotes and maybe has had enough. Thanks for 2008 when you sacrificed years of your life to roid up and get a ring, but those days are over and so are you JC. do that little jig of yours right out the door. I hear the Mets just love monkey clowns like you.

The original JC made the ultimate sacrifice for the good of mankind. The current JC needs to take the Phall Pfor the Phils

HR numbers for the bullpen are down and they need someone to give up the long ball. Zags excells in that role.

The best team in baseball doesn't care what fanboys and armchair managers think -- thankfully.
