Phillies plan to non-tender Nate Schierholtz

POSTED: Friday, November 30, 2012, 5:20 PM

Nate Schierholtz’s short stay in Philadelphia is likely over.

According to an ESPN.com report, the Phillies informed Schierholtz that he would not be offered a contract for 2013. All major league teams have until 11:59 p.m. on Friday to decide whether or not to tender a contract to arbitration-eligible players.

The only other Phillies player who is arbitration eligible is reliever Antonio Bastardo, who will be tendered a contract for 2013.

After coming over in the July 31 trade that sent Hunter Pence to San Francisco, the 28-year-old Schierholtz hit .273 with one home run in 37 games with the Phillies.

Overall, Schierholtz hit .257 with a .728 OPS and six home runs in 114 games between Philadelphia and San Francisco in 2012. His played was limited shortly after joining the Phillies after landing on the disabled list with a foot injury.

Schierholtz’s salary likely played into the team’s decision to non-tender him.

Schierholtz made $1.3 million in 2012. Since he would earn a raise through arbitration, Schierholtz would have been an expensive fourth or fifth outfielder.

While the Phils have been trying to upgrade their outfield this winter, let-handed hitters Domonic Brown and Laynce Nix and right-handers John Mayberry Jr. and Darin Ruf all figure to be back in 2013. Schierholtz will become a free agent at midnight.

The Phillies will trade Cliff Lee back to Cleveland for one of MLB's most underrated RF's, Shin Soo Choo and some other top prospects in Cleveland's organization.

Gotta love the let handed hitters on this team. And why is Nix and Mayberry still around? PATHETIC

if there's a plan here, someone needs to let me in on it fast. I thought Schierholtz was a bit of a stiff but, seriously, was he not at least a 5th outfielder? This tells me that Mayberry will be slotted 4th or 5th, Brown and Ruf will make the team, and two outfielders are headed our way.

It just would be nice if these two guys get here while there's still players out there to be had.

@marie elena, I thought the Phillies robbed LA and SF in those trades. Just not having to pay those two stiffs to hit .220 and .245 was a coup.

Seems to me our corner OF positions are decent and low-cost with Ruf/Nix and Brown/Mayberry, or some variation thereof. I have no doubt Amaro will get Hamilton, Bourn or Pagan, even if he overpays. There is no way you spend as much money as Amaro has on Hamels, Lee, Halladay and Papelbon, and leave a gaping hole in the outfield. Just won't happen.

Journeyman. If losing this guy us an issue, your team is in trouble.

Why is this news? There was no way he was going to be tendered. Nate being arbitration eligible, he would have received close to $3 million to be an extra outfielder. Too many less expensive options with better production. Enough of mediocrity with high expectations.

Did somebody really refer to Cholly Manuel as the "hitting guru"? OK, I'm back from rolling on the floor in a fit of laughter! Cholly may well be the worst hitting instructor (please see Phillies "approach to AB's"/K's/BB's) and certainly the worst strategic game-day manager in MLB! Let's hope Sandberg is our Skipper by Independence Day!

Complain some more you pathetic fans. You don't deserve winning teams with this ongoing negativity and superior view of everything GM's and managers should be doing. Let's put pressure on Amaro to make a deal so he will make be guaranteed to make a bad one. Let's give away all of the prospects now so you can complain two years from now about no prospects in the farm system. Totally pathetic.
