Phillies plan to non-tender Nate Schierholtz

POSTED: Friday, November 30, 2012, 5:20 PM

Nate Schierholtz’s short stay in Philadelphia is likely over.

According to an ESPN.com report, the Phillies informed Schierholtz that he would not be offered a contract for 2013. All major league teams have until 11:59 p.m. on Friday to decide whether or not to tender a contract to arbitration-eligible players.

The only other Phillies player who is arbitration eligible is reliever Antonio Bastardo, who will be tendered a contract for 2013.

After coming over in the July 31 trade that sent Hunter Pence to San Francisco, the 28-year-old Schierholtz hit .273 with one home run in 37 games with the Phillies.

Overall, Schierholtz hit .257 with a .728 OPS and six home runs in 114 games between Philadelphia and San Francisco in 2012. His played was limited shortly after joining the Phillies after landing on the disabled list with a foot injury.

Schierholtz’s salary likely played into the team’s decision to non-tender him.

Schierholtz made $1.3 million in 2012. Since he would earn a raise through arbitration, Schierholtz would have been an expensive fourth or fifth outfielder.

While the Phils have been trying to upgrade their outfield this winter, let-handed hitters Domonic Brown and Laynce Nix and right-handers John Mayberry Jr. and Darin Ruf all figure to be back in 2013. Schierholtz will become a free agent at midnight.

Pick him up, don't give him much of a tryout, and then dump him. Stupid. Word in Denver is the Rockies will make an offer to Fowler, who is erratic at best. Looks like it's Washington and Atlanta's time to be the NL East's big spenders.

What's the rush? A lot of guys will be available as soon as the tendering deadline passes.

The SF Giants won a World Series championship in 2010 and again in 2012. There was only one player in the starting lineup in 2010 that was there in 2012. However, the manager remained the same.

    You do the math.

Ø Vietnamvet, I along with others believe the puppy love afforded Brown has been the major stumbling block in setting up the outfield. Just a season ago, the Phillies protected Michael Martinez, kept him on the roster, and sent Brown to Lehigh Valley. Doesn't that tell people something ?

It is amazing that they got really nothing for Pence or Victorino.

I guess you've never heard of Ethan Martin...To get an arm like that for an expiring contrat (Victorino) was a coup...Agreed on the fact that Tommy Joseph is NOWHERE enough for Hunter Pence, who they gave up 3 REALLY good prospects for just 12 monthes earlier.

Peter Moylan just got released by Atlanta. I don't think he's an 8th inning type guy anymore, but when he's healthy he's a very good reliever. Would bring some nice 7th/8th inning depth

@phineas: Brown has upside, Martinez has versatility. They opted for the versatility because of all the injury questions. It looked like Brown made some progress last season. He has nothing left to prove in the Minors, and neither does Ruf. A darkhorse candidate for the CF job could be Gillies. He has blazing speed and catches the ball well. The Reds used to play Cesar Geronimo is CF and he could not hit a lick. They need to be serious about defense behind the pitchers they have spent a mint for, and who do not have a lot of years left when they can be expected to excel (Hallady and Lee).

He's better than Mayberry or Brown. People will be sorry as as Brown continues his slide. At least he's slow -- trying to get to the ball. Poor outfielder. Yea, Brown. Phils' fans want you.

Who are you guys? Nobody is going to trade for Brown. You couldn't give him away. Brown for A-Rod? We need Lewis Black to go crazy over the Phillies' fandumb.

This comment, along with the one above it, is spot on. The armchair GM's here are...well..."entertaining".

There is a plan that none of the sportswriters seem to have a grasp on yet. It will probably all come into focus sometime next week. The baseball writers in this city are not nearly as good as they used to be.
