Nate Schierholtz’s short stay in Philadelphia is likely over.
According to an ESPN.com report, the Phillies informed Schierholtz that he would not be offered a contract for 2013. All major league teams have until 11:59 p.m. on Friday to decide whether or not to tender a contract to arbitration-eligible players.
The only other Phillies player who is arbitration eligible is reliever Antonio Bastardo, who will be tendered a contract for 2013.
After coming over in the July 31 trade that sent Hunter Pence to San Francisco, the 28-year-old Schierholtz hit .273 with one home run in 37 games with the Phillies.
Overall, Schierholtz hit .257 with a .728 OPS and six home runs in 114 games between Philadelphia and San Francisco in 2012. His played was limited shortly after joining the Phillies after landing on the disabled list with a foot injury.
Schierholtz’s salary likely played into the team’s decision to non-tender him.
Schierholtz made $1.3 million in 2012. Since he would earn a raise through arbitration, Schierholtz would have been an expensive fourth or fifth outfielder.
While the Phils have been trying to upgrade their outfield this winter, let-handed hitters Domonic Brown and Laynce Nix and right-handers John Mayberry Jr. and Darin Ruf all figure to be back in 2013. Schierholtz will become a free agent at midnight.

Planless? No, clueless.— 24sDad - Schierholtz is a hack, no better than a journeyman, no better or worse (but older) than Brown and Mayberry. He won't be missed. If they eventually find someone to play centerfield who can get a meaningful hit every onc in a while.
So far, Reubden Amoron has bitterly failed to improve this team. Upton may not be a star in waiting but he was better that anything else out there. When you offer 20 million less that the main competition Braves, do you really want the guy?
Bourn would fit right is with all his strikeouts. Who needs him? Victorino is old news and needs to stay out of Philadelphia. Pagan is ordinary. Best chance is to get Fowler from Colorado without purging the minor league system like they did for Halladay Oswalt and Pence.(Was Ed Wade the fool or did he outsmart Reuben/ The latter!— gentian - Actually Schierholtz is younger than Mayberry. And has a better career record. Oh, so what?
- Now go get Dexter Fowler and have a nice every day outfield of Ruf, Dexter and Brownie. Give the Rockies Mayberry, Worley and a pick of any minor league pitcher in the organization except Biddle or Martin.— Dull

- They have too many so-so outfielders, particularly when they're shopping for outfielders. So no surprise here. Schierholtz seemed like he could be a solid bench or platoon guy but for his price tag you figured it might go this way. I'd also try to package Nix up in a trade. Leave Mayberry as the primary bench guy who can play all OF positions and 1B. Figure one starting OF is the elusive FA/trade piece we have yet to see, two or parts of two are Ruf and Brown ... but I don't think Brown is untouchable if the right trade comes along.— s

Good for Hunter Pence to get that ring! Interesting watching a San Fran dynasty I thought it was suppose to be a Phillies dynasty.
