Phillies place Madson on disabled list
Daily News Staff
Phillies right-hander Ryan Madson was placed on the 15-day disabled list today with a right hand contusion, retroactive to June 19, Senior Vice President and General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-hander Andrew Carpenter had his contract selected from triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Madson, 30, is 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA in 31 games for the Phillies this season. He has converted 15 of his 16 save opportunities while striking out 34 batters over 31.0 innings (9.87 SO/9.0 IP). Madson is holding opposing hitters to a .230 average (26-113), including a .167 average with runners in scoring position (4-24), while 26 of his 31 appearances have been scoreless (84%).
Carpenter has gone 5-0 with a 1.58 ERA in 24 games for Lehigh valley this season and has not allowed a run over his last eight appearances (13.1 innings). The 26-year-old has surrendered just 34 hits and nine walks over 45.2 innings this season (0.94 WHIP), while striking out 51 (10.05 SO/9.0 IP). In five career appearances with the Phillies, including one start, Carpenter is 1-1 with a 9.31 ERA in 9.2 innings.
Tired, old Cholly burns out another arm. Wilhelm Von Humboldt
I guess that Bastardo will be the next one to go on the DL. It seems that the more they baby these guys the more they get hurt. I can never remember this many injuries back in the 60's when I was growing up watching the Phils. PortCity
Great opportunity for Bastardo....Madson is out of here next year anyway with Boras as his agent! Bummy Davis
Not only do many of you wear your hearts on your sleeve but also your brains! Without a RH power hitter, a season long hitting slump and a rotating bullpen, the Phils have the best record in baseball. Those of you that think that Charlie doesn't care about his pitching staff don't know what your talking about!!!! Jersey_Joe
Sonny and Wilhelm...you do realize that Brian Wilson has pitched 5 more innings of baseball than Madson...AND Brian Wilson was on the DL for a few weeks.
So here's a question...How can 2 guys, who are so lazy, they can't even be bothered to look up a stat, ever be afforded an opinion? I mean, honestly, a real Phillies fan would even know that Madson hasn't been used much because he's not in the top of SO (that's save opportunities Wilhelm and Sonny), when compared to the rest of the league.
It's obvious that you don't like the Phillies manager, but if you want people to actually respect your opinion, shouldn't you at least try a little? Otherwise it's called trolling... MFPhils
Guess I should re-read when I ripping on someone to check for typos...That's SVO :P MFPhils
If the Phils are close to maxed out on salary, I can't see bringing in pitching. I'd devote all available resources to right handed hitting--for average AND power. Maddy and Contrary will be back soon enough and the organization is pretty darned deep in hurlers right now. doc35
Madson hurt his hand, not his arm. That's not Charlie's fault. And why would Ruben admit to opponents who is hurt? Seriously, stop posting stupid things. It makes Philly fans look bad. PhillyfaninMD
The thing in question here is not overuse or babying pitchers and/or players, it's using players when there are red flags all over the place that something is wrong with them. We kept hearing both Lidge and Utley were ok. And the team kept playing them. Lidge hasn't thrown a ball all year and he might not throw another pitch for the Phillies and Utley missed significant time. Then, when Blanton lost whatever FB he had, Charlie, Dubee and RAJ kept saying he was ok and kept throwing him out there. Same with Oswalt, Contreras and now Madson. What the hell is going on here? Is Polanco next? EL Zorro
Hey Sonny boy, if you watched the games you would know Madson hurt his hand trying to bare hand a ball through the box. Three closers on the DL, Chooch, Utley, Victorino, Blanton, and Oswalt all on the DL this year and we are on pace for 100 wins and the best record in baseball. If we had a genius like Tony Larussa we would probably win a 120. chuck49- I'm glad someone cares about the facts. That hand has been bothering him since it got hit and it got worse. This has nothing to do with babying or overusing pitchers or bad manager decisions.
Heath Bell would be really nice but I can't see how they could afford him. s
Going to need 7+ innings from each starter, and up to 6 outs for each reliever to keep the pen fresh throughout the series!!! Bobby G
I suspect Madson is on the DL because the Phillies want another arm in case a game gets out of hand or they need a lot of innings. 15 days from June 19 is July 3, Sunday. About overuse, Kimbrel for Atlanta has pitched in 39 games, Venters in 42 and O'Flaherty (who was injured for a while)in 36. Bastardo (and Madson) have pitched in 31 games. Charlie has spread out the work fairly well. RJLFan
