Phillies place Madson on disabled list
Daily News Staff
Phillies right-hander Ryan Madson was placed on the 15-day disabled list today with a right hand contusion, retroactive to June 19, Senior Vice President and General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-hander Andrew Carpenter had his contract selected from triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Madson, 30, is 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA in 31 games for the Phillies this season. He has converted 15 of his 16 save opportunities while striking out 34 batters over 31.0 innings (9.87 SO/9.0 IP). Madson is holding opposing hitters to a .230 average (26-113), including a .167 average with runners in scoring position (4-24), while 26 of his 31 appearances have been scoreless (84%).
Carpenter has gone 5-0 with a 1.58 ERA in 24 games for Lehigh valley this season and has not allowed a run over his last eight appearances (13.1 innings). The 26-year-old has surrendered just 34 hits and nine walks over 45.2 innings this season (0.94 WHIP), while striking out 51 (10.05 SO/9.0 IP). In five career appearances with the Phillies, including one start, Carpenter is 1-1 with a 9.31 ERA in 9.2 innings.
Talk about baptist of fire...will be interesting to see what Carpenter does with the Red Sox lineup. hotelguy
Phils could use a closer for the Boston series. No Lidge, Contreras or Madson. P Even
We, the Phillies fans, have been lied to AGAIN! Just yesterday, Madson was going to be ready to go today. RAJ is losing credability every day. scootch
Good that it wasn't a break. Madson will be back and be fine. Bob1
Hope that isn't his $20 million contract signing hand. Joe Lis lives- bastardo will be great as a closer. but if carpenter throws one pitch in this series, consider that game lost, unfortunately. the problem with this injury is that now juan perez is the only lefty out of the pen. he's got good stuff, but has worse control than rick ankiel. WOW, no closer for the Red Sox series....and beyond. When will it end..?! 5NOT4
More clubhouse anger? MrBryan
The big question will be, is Madson hurt alot worse than they are reporting? If he's had this problem for a month and its been getting worse, how can they sell to us that he will be fine in 3-4 days? Doesn't sound right to me. Phillies should try Bastardo as the closer right now. He's got the stuff and hopefully he'll be able to deal with the pressure. bradco
Here's hoping Lee and/or Hamels throws a complete game. eman
Another examaple of Uncle Cholly not giving a hoot about Dave Montgomery's prized assets and only caring that he signed a contract extension in Spring Training and gets paid no matter how he detroys the pitching arms.............. sonnybuoy01
The time is right now to get serious about bringing in Heath Bell. Seeing Red
Baseball apparently is a tougher sport than football with all of these injuries shawnmac
Halladay, Hamels and Lee are going to have to pitch complete games every time out if the Phillies are going to keep winning. With Worley and Kendrick good for only about 6 innings apiece, the bullpen (or what's left of it) will surely be tested on those nights. SteveS11- @sonny, i have never heard such nonsense. the phillies have the most underused bullpen in all of baseball. madson was injured when hit with a line drive, how is that charlie's fault? shame on me for being bothered by your ritard remark.
