Phillies outfielder Hunter Pence announced on Twitter today that he had surgery this morning, presumably for a sports hernia.

“Hey everyone, been hanging around Philly. My surgery went well today and I'm feeling good,” he tweeted. “Now I can start working towards 2012 and get ready for a great full season with the Phils.”

Pence did not indicate the type of surgery, although the Phillies announced Saturday that Pence would undergo an MRI exam to determine the extent of a sports hernia.

Pence hit .324 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI in 54 games with the Phillies after being acquired from Houston. He hit .211 and drove in four runs in the National League Division Series loss to St. Louis.

“Thanks for all the incredible support,” Pence tweeted over the weekend. “I'm grateful to be a part of this season and of course disappointed I couldn't do more.”

Placido Polanco is also scheduled for surgery for a sports hernia.
