Pedro Martinez doesn't want to go into the Hall of Fame as a Phillie

There's a decent interview with Pedro Martinez in today's New York Times.

You can get the whole thing here, but to sum it up: He doesn't consider himself retired, he could sign a contract today and pitch in a month, and he is open to pitching this season. Obviously, the Phillies have no need for him, and probably don't have much of an ability to pay him.

But the Times did ask Martinez an interesting question: If the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies each offered you a contract, which would you pick?

"I’d probably have to say the Red Sox," Martinez said. "I would like to win a World Series in the National League, so the Phillies are in there, too. But for the time I’m going to be playing, I think Boston is more suitable so that I can retire with the Boston Red Sox and go to the Hall of Fame with the same hat."

So you can cancel the Cooperstown hotel reservations you made for five years from now.

Martinez does, however, pick the Phillies to win the World Series.

Pedro pitched a half a season with the Phillies, so no one should be surprised or disappointed that he wouldn't prefer to go into the Hall of Fame as a Phillie. Pedro's "Favre" routine is getting kind of old anyway. Honestly, I have my doubts that he can still be an effective major league pitcher anyway, at this stage of the game. But in any case, the Phillies don't need him, so who cares?

I sincerely doubt that Danny Tartabull will ever have to struggle with making the decision of which cap to wear when he's voted into the Hall of Fame.

That's just a stupid thought that he would go into the hall as a Phillie.

Not only is the assertion ridiculous - why on Earth would he go in as a Phillie when he barely played for Phillie - but you're creating a headline out of something the guy didn't even say. He didn't say anything negative about entering the Hall as a Phillie. He said he would like to enter the hall with a Red Sox cap and you're trying to spin it into some sort of negative comment against Philly? In fact, if you check the actual article that was linked above, Pedro picks the Phillies to win the World Series. Come on Murphy, you're better than that. I expect this kind of garbage from Gelb, not you.

In defense of Pedro: He was the Sandy Koufax of his time. Dazzling, dominating stuff from a relatively small man's body. Over a 7-8 year period, there simply was no better pitcher in the game. Over a 7-8 year period, there may never have been such a dominant pitcher. His career wins are low by HOW standards -- 219. His career won-loss ration is incredible, more than 2-1: 219-100, about a .675 winning percentage. By comparison, Nolan Ryan won 324 games but he also lost 292 games, a .526 winning percentage. Pedro may not have been as durable as some of the bigger, stronger starting pitching, but that's not the only way to measure greatness. He goes into the HOF first ballot, in my opinion -- as a Red Sox.

First ballet slam dunk? Maybe but not as sure as the slam dunk he put on Zimmer.

Why would he go in with a Phillies' hat? He had a cup of coffee with them. It would "cheapen" our brand.

It's stupid if you react negatively to his choice, you sound like a goofy homer when you put him down for it.

What? Why not? The Red Sox don't even want him now and they stink! Of course, he's got some ego just assuming he's in in the first place, Johnny Bench might not allow it.

I don't sign in to comment very often, but I just had to chime in here. Everyone needs to chill out and see the humor in the headline. Before I read the comments, I assumed it was a sarcastic headline, then I noticed Dave even said in the comments that he was joking (he's allowed to do that, it's a blog), yet you all continued to act like he's a moron for thinking Pedro should go in the HoF as a Phillie. Find a sense of humor, people! It was good for a chuckle, I'm sure that's all he was going for.

Would love to know what the point of this article is and how did Pedro Martinez suddenly become a news storywhen he's not even playing? Im sure there was some thing sports related that happened recently that is more relevant than this
