Pedro Martinez doesn't want to go into the Hall of Fame as a Phillie

There's a decent interview with Pedro Martinez in today's New York Times.

You can get the whole thing here, but to sum it up: He doesn't consider himself retired, he could sign a contract today and pitch in a month, and he is open to pitching this season. Obviously, the Phillies have no need for him, and probably don't have much of an ability to pay him.

But the Times did ask Martinez an interesting question: If the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies each offered you a contract, which would you pick?

"I’d probably have to say the Red Sox," Martinez said. "I would like to win a World Series in the National League, so the Phillies are in there, too. But for the time I’m going to be playing, I think Boston is more suitable so that I can retire with the Boston Red Sox and go to the Hall of Fame with the same hat."

So you can cancel the Cooperstown hotel reservations you made for five years from now.

Martinez does, however, pick the Phillies to win the World Series.

Phillies should of kept Pedro, even at his age he's an upgrade from Hammels!

Ted Williams set the ultimate standard for the way to retire: a comeback season topped by a home run in his final at bat. The baseball equivalent of dying in one's sleep.

The title of this post is stupid. Why would anyone think Pedro would enter the Hall in any other uniform besides the Sox. He played in Philly for a couple of months.

Pedro being Pedro. I think players should go into the HOF today wearing a mint green cap fixed with a "$" logo, and MLB on the side. It captures the true essence of the modern ballplayer. HOF caps can then be purchased at MLB.com, in your own team colors, or in the original mint green, and a replica signature can of your favorite HOFer will affixed to the brim of the cap, all for only $24.99 + tax.

Did anyone in their right mind think he would enter the HOF as a Phillie? Come on.

Ridiculous premise. That would be like a Met fan being disappointed that Richie Ashburn went in as a Phillie!

The reason no one got the sarcasm of this column is because Murphy is so prone to saying ridiculous things and everyone bought it as real.

Commom sense and rules would say that he would go in the HOF as a Red Sox. Whether he gets into the HOF is another story.

Another title drummed up to get readers who are looking for a fight. Pedro didnt say anything wrong here...in fact, seems to give props to the Fightins. I will never think of him as anything other than a Red Sock, and that is not a good thing.
