Paulino

Twitter'ed this earlier this afternoon (http://www.twitter.com/highcheese) but figured I'd throw this up here as well. Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports.com mentioned in his column today that the Phillies have let teams know that Ronny Paulino is available via trade. I haven't had anyone inside the Phillies organization specifically tell me that they are shopping Paulino, but I do know that Coste is viewed as the back-up catcher, and that keeping Paulino in the minors would create a logjam of sorts, especially since Lou Marson's idea landing place is with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. So it makes sense for the Phillies to put feelers out there.

Elsewhere, the Cardinals released lefty Royce Ring today. Doubt the Phillies have much interest -- he hasn't had much success against lefties or righties -- but figured I'd point it out.

Looks like the Ronny Paulino era is over before it started. They just don't make those third-string catchers the way they used to.

I'm confused by the lack of interest in this guy he put up numbers in the majors he hit over .290 and showed some power. Usally if you do that as a catcher you are gonna get paid. I understand he got fat, but man lots of players get fat, especially when you play for the Pirates.

It could be an attitude problem.

why waste Kendrick and Paulino on Jeff Baker? I don't understand the fascination with him. We already have a few righties bats in camp that are just as "good" as Baker.

Paulino sucks. I knew he sucked without watching him play or even looking at his stats? How? Simple logic. A rotten team like the Pirates aren't going to trade the Phillies a decent player, at catcher no less, for what the Phillies gave up. There was no need to replace Coste anyway. Coste is one of the best back-up catchers in baseball. Don't believe me? Good look at his stats versus other number two catchers around the league. He is a better hitter then 90% of them and his defense is no worse then average.

uh, Murph, it's been up on the Phillies website since this AM. That may be a good indication they're shopping him.

The guy refuses to hustle in the one position on the field that demands hustle. Anybody see him today against the Yankees when he took a leisurely stroll after a ball thus affording the baserunners the opportunity to advance. He looked like some little leaguer who forgot there were men on base. I gotta believe the Paulino trade was done by the Phillies as a favor to John Russell, former Phillies AAA manager.

Paulino hasn't hit anywhere near .290 since 2006. He hit .212 last year and .263 the year before. He's gotten progressively worse since he arrived in the majors. The Phils took a flyer on him to see if they could generate some competition for the back-up catcher spot. He didn't pan out. No big deal. It's not like they gave up anything of value for him in the first place. It was worth a shot. Marson needs those AAA at-bats though because he should definitely be on the major league active roster next year.

2 Things here. First, I can't stand twitter... but seriously if you are going to use it at least get the terminology right. You "tweet" things on twitter. You don't say "twitter'ed" you say "tweeted." Secondly, Paulino sucks. This should be no surprise. He had a great rookie year and its been all downhill from there. He had a bat worse than Ruiz last season to the point where the lowly Bucs even shipped him off to AAA. This trade was made to clear out space in AAA for Marson. Jaramillo had been passed over and was just wasting space in the minors for the Phils.

Murph, I've got an idea. Maybe Paulino could honor his Phils contract by playing for the Eagles. The Eagles need a fullback and Paulino is a big burly guy who could probably block a defensive player better than a wild pitch. And besides, he could keep all his weight. What do you think?
