Park's starting job in jeopardy?
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Reading between the lines is always dangerous, so all we can do is report what Charlie Manuel had to say in his post-game news conference.
Manuel said he and pitching coach Rich Dubee would sit down and evaluate the team's pitching situation. One topic of discussion will certainly be the struggles of righthander Chan Ho Park, who walked six and allowed seven runs in 4 2/3 innings Friday night.
"Our pitching is something we'll talk over," Manuel said. "I'm not ready to say Chan Ho Park is not going to get any more starts. I'm not ready to say that."
That's hardly a strong vote of confidence.
The Phillies have other options, whether it is now or in the future. Park pitched well in his last start, but struggled mightily last night. Lefthander J.A. Happ, meanwhile, pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Righthanders Kyle Kendrick and Carlos Carrasco have pitched well this season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Manuel said the team's other options would factor into whatever decision is ultimately made.
Park needs to get it together. The games I've seen him pitch he has great stuff- nasty curve, 95 mph fastball with movement, good change of pace- but he doesn't pitch smart at all. He tries to nibble and makes too many mistakes. It's hard to dog him though when Blanton and Hamels are doing just as bad and Myers and Moyer are stinking it up too. jtj06
When Ruiz went on the DL the Phils were 4 games under .500. When he came back they were one game over. When Coste caught Moyer during that period he was 3-0. When Ruiz caught Moyer yesterday he gives up a run an inning. The Coste walk helped set up the winning run in yesterday's game. For some reason over the four years Coste has been in the mix all the Phils do is WIN! Dull
Park is lousy, we're not going to win many games when he pitches. I'd like to see Happ get the 5th slot for the next month and see what he can do. I never liked the signing of Park, he got rocked for years in Texas and he's doing the same type of thing here. He can't pitch in this park GHOSTPHAYCE
I’d say - Let's see how Blanton does on his next start. No to Park as a starter, put in bullpen Cut Cairo. Bring up K.K. - take Park's spot Put Hamels on dl retro to his last start – so his ankle heals right. Have Happ take Hamels' spot – Call up Majewki for bullpen marco3535

Park is just about ready to be "Etonized." Walking 6 batters in 5 innings on a bad day isn't the worst of it. On a good day he is wild in the strike zone, with the expected results. He has to have a super-duper day to be an effective pitcher. But, the good, reliable pitchers have the ability to win with less than super-duper stuff or control. Park has to be removed from the starting rotation. Park might not be the only pitcher who's out of the rotation by the All-Star break. Moyer and Blanton are big question marks, IMO. It's fantasy to think that Moyer can provide the number of innings or match his 16 wins of last year. He looks like he's aging fast, that he can no longer pitch every 5th game. I have nothing but admiration for him, but I think he's run out the string. Blanton's big problem is that he is too big. He is a blimp. The reincarnation of Jon Lieber. I don't see how a guy shaped like him can be in any kind of shape to pitch 150-200 innings. There are only so many David Wellses in the world. And the new David Wells is . . . C. C. Sabathia, for all that's worth, not Blanton. So, I'll predict that as they come out of the All-Star break the Phillies will have at least two of the three younger guys--Happ, Carrasco, Kendrick--in the starting rotation. How much worse could they do? There's no post season for this team if the ERA remains above 6.00, that's for sure. PHANPHOREVER
Chan-Ho Park will do a lot better at bat than on pitching mound. sig12
