Park's starting job in jeopardy?

POSTED: Friday, May 1, 2009, 11:22 PM

Reading between the lines is always dangerous, so all we can do is report what Charlie Manuel had to say in his post-game news conference.

Manuel said he and pitching coach Rich Dubee would sit down and evaluate the team's pitching situation. One topic of discussion will certainly be the struggles of righthander Chan Ho Park, who walked six and allowed seven runs in 4 2/3 innings Friday night.

"Our pitching is something we'll talk over," Manuel said. "I'm not ready to say Chan Ho Park is not going to get any more starts. I'm not ready to say that."

That's hardly a strong vote of confidence.

The Phillies have other options, whether it is now or in the future. Park pitched well in his last start, but struggled mightily last night. Lefthander J.A. Happ, meanwhile, pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Righthanders Kyle Kendrick and Carlos Carrasco have pitched well this season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Manuel said the team's other options would factor into whatever decision is ultimately made.

I can't say I'm surprised. Manuel was making a point by taking Park out with two outs, two on and the pitcher next in the batting order. He was sending a message to the owner's box, loud and clear. I think they got the message. I sure did.

Park was awful. At least it was fun to watch Adam Eaton give up long home runs. Park just walks them in.

Manuel's message wasn't about ownership wanting to win, it was about the level of suckiness they gave him in a 5th starter. They basically told him he had to be a starter, not a reliever. Happ would have been the better option, and will likely finally get it

Yeah, but the 5th starter on the Phils doesn't have to suck - not when you have Happ and Carrasco in the wings who have the potential to be great pitchers in this league. Park reached his plateau years ago as a starter, and he's at best a long reliever at this point in his career (and he did pretty well doing that last season). I'd swap Happ and Park in the roles if it were up to me.

It's only been one month, guys, one month. I think to bring in Happ right now would be a good move for the kid's confidence and bc it would only motivate Park moreso. Win-win call. We chose Park bc of $$ reasons; despite that, I don't think he'd stay this bad all year.

I agree that Park is sucking it up and Happ should get his chance to start, but enough of the racial comments, srg12969. "Park should go back to Korea and retire." Your comment is offensive.

Happ to starter, Park to Korea Rice Cakes and DR Heller to long man in pen. Works for me so long as my pal DR realizes he will have to warm up with Costie. Werth will come out of his funk today and Dunkirk will win the Derby. Book it ,

Righthanders Kyle Kendrick and Carlos Carrasco have pitched well this season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley ??? hello ???? what dream team have you been watching ????? Carlos is not even near ready for the big show... Kyle is showing much better, just needs to reduce his walks... lf anything l see Park going to long relief and Happ stepping up... he looks sharp on the mound, confident.. Koplove and Majewski are doing great also... what a great backup system... gonna come in handy one day soon...l'm sure.

Chan Ho Eaton should be sent to join his brother, Adam.
