Padres GM: Peavy deal off

From Paul Hagen in Las Vegas at the winter meetings:

Padres general manager Kevin Towers said at the winter meetings this morning that he was told by the Cubs that they plan to move in another direction and that they are no longer interested in acquiring righthander Jake Peavy from San Diego.

That would seem to indicate that the chances of the Phillies getting Mark DeRosa, which was rumored to be part of a three-way deal, are dead as well.

That could mean that the Phillies now turn their attention toward Twins outfielder Delmon Young, a trade that would likely require them to part with top prospect Jason Donald.

UPDATE: Infielder Nick Punto has agreed to a 2-year contract to return to the Minnesota Twins. The deal includes an option for 2011. There had been indications that the Phillies were interested in Punto rejoining the team.
