Padres GM: Peavy deal off

POSTED: Thursday, December 11, 2008, 1:47 PM

From Paul Hagen in Las Vegas at the winter meetings:

Padres general manager Kevin Towers said at the winter meetings this morning that he was told by the Cubs that they plan to move in another direction and that they are no longer interested in acquiring righthander Jake Peavy from San Diego.

That would seem to indicate that the chances of the Phillies getting Mark DeRosa, which was rumored to be part of a three-way deal, are dead as well.

That could mean that the Phillies now turn their attention toward Twins outfielder Delmon Young, a trade that would likely require them to part with top prospect Jason Donald.

UPDATE: Infielder Nick Punto has agreed to a 2-year contract to return to the Minnesota Twins. The deal includes an option for 2011. There had been indications that the Phillies were interested in Punto rejoining the team.

I agree, don't do it. Teach Donald to play LF and use him to cover 2B/LF instead. Concentrate on pitching. And remember Gillick's philosophy that without good character, a player is incomplete. (See interview on phillies.com)

Larry Bowa was never that high on DeRosa so I think it's good things didn't work out.

the only thing i didn't like about the DeRosa deal was the possibility of losing Happ. I'd like to see what he can do as a regular member of the starting rotation.

From beyondtheboxscore.com "Whatever happened to Delmon Young?": The report on Young is that he is simply a slightly below average hitter with a strong arm, but still finds a way to be weak in the other areas of defense that matter; see range. TotalValue had Young at minus 0.8 runs overall, equal to Pablo Ozuna. Word now comes that Young might be on the move once more, leaving some to wonder: will Young live up to his potential? To begin his skills assessment Young has improved his selection at the plate, however Delmon could not see Russia while standing on the Alaskan border.

Character, please. He had one incident when he was 21. He is only 23 and will get better. He will play for Manuel and be humbled playing for a championship caliber team. Plus 11 outfield assists. Thank God the deal is dead. What is Amaro doing wasting his time focusing on these 35+ year old free agents?? Now he's talking about Chan Ho Park??? What's going on already?? I think Gillick better hand cuff themselves before Amaro does something off the wall.

I think people are overreacting on how mental delmon young is...yes the incident with the umpire was disturbing but it happened 3 years go, everyone does stupid things in life that they later regret, move on with it, also if charlie manuel was able to control albert belle and manny for all those years, I think with the help of rollins and howard they could keep young in line

This would be the 2nd trade for Young in his.. young career. If I'm Amaro there is no way I give up my best prospect for this guy.

Totally disagree with everyone: go get Young. He's young, fast, has power potential, and can actually field his position. One bad press incident while in the TB farm system, and he's been labeled a "problem." A certain Philadelphia pitcher broke his hand while getting in a bar fight while in the minors, and he turned out ok. I'd love to see what Delmon could do under Charlie's tutelage and in this ballpark.

If the supposed deal for the Phillies to ge DeRosa was for the Phils to ship prospects to the Cubs who would then send them to the Padres for Peavy, then why can't Amaro just deal directly with Towers? That is, if the Phillies would be interested in a front line starter who is under contract for the next few years.

I agree with you 100%...Brett Myers has done a lot more things in his career to question his charecter, yet if the phillies gave up on him theres no way they would have been world series champs this year...jason donald could become a good solid player, but hes blocked at ss and 2nd and the phillies picked their 3b future in last years draft, so I can't see him ending up there, If its young for donald straight up I would do it
