Oswalt: Option year is 'no big deal'

POSTED: Saturday, July 24, 2010, 2:37 PM

The prevailing opinion as teams try to acquire Houston pitcher Roy Oswalt has been that any team would need to pick up Oswalt's $16 million for 2012 in order for him to waive his no-trade clause.

That might not be the case, Oswalt said yesterday.

“The money part I can work out with anybody, that’s no big deal,” Oswalt told reporters, according to the Houston Chronicle. “We can work on doing different things as far as restructuring; whatever they want to do.

“I’m going to find a way to get it done if it works for both of us. I’m not going to go somewhere that’s going to be bad for me.”

Oswalt's name has been linked to the Phillies, among other teams, but St. Louis was perceived to the be the favorite because it is close to his boyhood home in Missouri. Oswalt indicated staying in the Midwest was not a prerequisite, either. Of course, by limiting the field, Oswalt could hurt his chances of moving.

“It helps for sure,” Oswalt said. “Family gets to watch me a little bit more. But anywhere you go, you’re still a six- to seven-hour drive.”

And Oswalt gave this direction his agent Bob Garber, after Oswalt was briefed yesterday on where things stood.

“ I’ve told him, ‘don’t call me every day,’  ” Oswalt said.

how can they let KK set foot in the major leagues again to fail for the 4th time? this entire management should be fired for the disgrace of letting this lack of talent ever pitch again

O.K. sewellmatt, to blow up your "good ole boy" theory even furhter; Kevin Kolb from Texas seems to have taken a liken' to Philly...and I don't think your reading in between the lines, your just coming up with your own theory. the Philly and St Louis rumors basically came out at the same time, and there never was any direct quotes from Oswalt saying his option had to be picked up in order to be traded, that was just the rumor, which he just dispelled with the above quotes...he might end up in St. Louis because they have more chips to trade, but I doubt very seriously he would pass up a chance to play for the Phillies when they'll have a legit shot at a championship for the next few years just because he is "a good ole boy" who doesn't do well in Philly.

This Roy seems like a Drama queen, he should be happy the Phillies want him, but it doesnt seem like he wants to be here, according to some media reports, so I say forget him, let him stay in Houston and play for last place.

wow, sewer-rat, er i mean sewellmatt, can you twist words into the favor of your thoughts than that? You are taking 100 rumors, twisting the words around, combining it into one story, and putting them back together the way you think they should go. You say you are just reading Oswalts words. If that is the case, then the fact is, all he said was that a team picking up his 16mil option next year is not a prerequisite for a successful trade. He also said he wasn't going to go somewhere bad for him which you are just assuming that's here. News flash, Philly went to WS the last two years. The best pitcher is baseball took less money and avoided free agency to come here (he's a good 'ole boy btw). So I don't think that Oswalt would avoid coming here. Might here prefer St. Louis, yes. But if I were trying to read between the lines, I would think his comment about saying the places are 7-8 hours away, I would think that includes Philly by plane. So let's all relax and see what happens.

Really Sewell? Oswalt would like to be as close to his family as much as possible. That's why his three preferred destinations were St. Louis, Atlanta, and Texas (until they traded for Lee and closing that choice). It has NOTHING to do with being a good ol' boy, you dope. He has preferences like anyone else would, but Oswalt dropped his option demand so he could facilitate a trade ANYWHERE out of Houston.

I think Ruben is playing us. He is certainly interested in Oswalt- he's a top pitcher after all- but he's not willing to pay the price in both players and money. Trading Werth to acquire prospects to then send to Houston is only one part of the equation. Money, plus additional prospects, is also required. I don't think they have the true desire to pull this off but they have to look like they're trying.

The Phillies made a huge mistake in trading Cliff Lee. Particularly when they knew their bullpen was shaky. The players we got in return for Lee are like American made cars-- they loose a third of their value the moment you take them off the lot. PULL THE TRIGGER!

Yeah the psychological advantage was gone in May when they were 6 games ahead before everyone got hurt, right Mark? EVERYONE in that clubhouse and some fans understand why Lee was traded. Because WE WOULDN'T HAVE ROY HALLADAY IF HE WASN't, and then next year when Lee walked, we'd have neither Lee nor Halladay. Lee is going to get at least 20mil/yr. I don't blame the Phillies for trading him. He's not THAT good or as good as Doc. GET. OVER. IT.

Boy, I bet those who have posted in this thread that KK will fail in his 4th stint up here look pretty stupid right about now, huh....The Cards cant afford to get Oswalt because that will tie up him and 6 other players for $90 million or so. People have said that the Phils are cheapskates when all they need to do is look out in St. Louis. They really dont want to bring their payroll up to $120 million and that almost puts them out of the running for Oswalt. Yeah, he might restructure his deal a little bit, but it probably wont be enough to trade him to St. Louis, plus that whole trading within the division thing, Houston will have to be BOWLED OVER to do that (hence why Halladay want traded to the Yanks, Sox or Rays). If Oswalt is willing to come to Philly and work out that guaranteed contract thing, then he will land in Philly. Sewell is right in that fact that a week ago, it leaned more towards St. Louis, but if these are the words that Roy is speaking now, then Philly has to be a favorite again.

I still like the Idea of Oswalt in the red pinstripes. But it still all depends on what they have to give up. If you include Happ in the deal who's our fifth starter? The Phils are loaded in outfield depth and at a ton of positions in A ball. If they could include the guys they got from the Mariners maybe some of Cliff Lee whiners would have some solice knowing that that trade got the phils something.

Remind me again why trading for Oswalt turns into an anti america comment? Dude dissing the phillies front office is one thing not likeing a trade is another but making an anti america comment will get you knocked out. The only car I've ever had that was a peice of .... was a honda civic I will never drive a foreign car again. Hears to the american made car makers.

The Phillies should tough it out for the balance of the season and forget the big name pitcher. Trade Werth and get some prospects to re-stock the farm teams. Then go after Cliff Lee or another free agent in the off season. Lee might not cost $ 16 Million a year in free agency.
