The Phillies have placed righthander Roy Oswalt on the 15-day disabled list with lower back inflammation. Kyle Kendrick will take his place in the rotation.
The Phils also brought up righthander Scott Mathieson from Triple A Lehigh Valley.
Catcher Brian Schneider was also activated from the disabled list prior to tonight’s game against the Oakland Athletics, while catcher Dane Sardinha was outrighted to Lehigh Valley.
Lefthander J.C. Romero was given his unconditional release.
Oswalt, 33, is 4-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 13 games. He is 1-5, 4.06 ERA over his last eight starts after going 3-1, 3.33 ERA in his first five starts. He previously spent time on the DL this season with lower back inflammation (April 27 – May 16).
Mathieson, 27, has gone 0-0 with five saves and a 2.59 ERA in 19 games with Lehigh Valley this season. He allowed just two earned runs over his last 18.2 innings (0.94 ERA), while 10 of his 11 appearances over that stretch were scoreless. In 13 career games with the Phillies, including eight starts, Mathieson is 1-4 with a 7.07 ERA in 42.0 innings.
Romero was originally designated for assignment following the Phillies’ game against the Marlins on June 16. He went 6-for-6 with four saves and a 2.73 ERA in 237 career games with Philadelphia (2007-11), including a 0-0 record and 3.86 ERA this season.
