Oswalt to DL; Kendrick back in rotation

POSTED: Friday, June 24, 2011, 4:36 PM

The Phillies have placed righthander Roy Oswalt on the 15-day disabled list with lower back inflammation. Kyle Kendrick will take his place in the rotation.

The Phils also brought up righthander Scott Mathieson from Triple A Lehigh Valley.

Catcher Brian Schneider was also activated from the disabled list prior to tonight’s game against the Oakland Athletics, while catcher Dane Sardinha was outrighted to Lehigh Valley.

Lefthander J.C. Romero was given his unconditional release.

Oswalt, 33, is 4-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 13 games. He is 1-5, 4.06 ERA over his last eight starts after going 3-1, 3.33 ERA in his first five starts. He previously spent time on the DL this season with lower back inflammation (April 27 – May 16).

Mathieson, 27, has gone 0-0 with five saves and a 2.59 ERA in 19 games with Lehigh Valley this season. He allowed just two earned runs over his last 18.2 innings (0.94 ERA), while 10 of his 11 appearances over that stretch were scoreless. In 13 career games with the Phillies, including eight starts, Mathieson is 1-4 with a 7.07 ERA in 42.0 innings.

Romero was originally designated for assignment following the Phillies’ game against the Marlins on June 16. He went 6-for-6 with four saves and a 2.73 ERA in 237 career games with Philadelphia (2007-11), including a 0-0 record and 3.86 ERA this season.

I don't think losing Oswalt would be the end of the world. He already had a good chance of retiring after 2011. We still have Halladay, Lee and Hamels. And I'm not ready to write Oswalt off just yet. Let his time on the DL play out go from there. We have Worley and Kendrick for now and Blanton coming back in a month or so.

With Mathieson, you'd like the guy to have a shot and succeed but he hasn't exactly helped his own case in his other trips to the majors. Good velocity but real control issues at times. We'll see this time around.

I would probably trade Brown for a good RH hat like Pence. But Brown's trade stock has to be sinking the way he's been playing.

This team will be playing in October with or without Oswalt. But I like their chances of their last, late October game being a victory if Oswalt is healthy. Take your time getting your back healthy, Roy O.

Dominated Brown LMAO Ain't it the truth. I wonder if the team is having second thoughts about gift wrapping Brian Gordon and sending him to the Spankees

Interesting that Oswalt's record is 1-5 since riding around on his bulldozer for a few days. Prior to that he was 3-1 and was the sharpest of the 4 starters.

    J.A. Happ is 3-9 with a 5.33 ERA. Myers is 3-6 with a 4.65 ERA. Stuff happens.

While I am not giving up on Oswalt yet for the year, I don't think he will be pitching pass this season, which is fine b/e it doesn't seem as though he wants to be...Let's just hope he is able to come back healthy and help us in September or early...

We have to give the Astros credit for getting three of our players in the Oswalt trade. Roy can always go back to being a farmer in Mississippi.

Alright so many comments to refute. A. Dom Brown is a ROOKIE he's going to strugle at times they have to let him get through it. Anyone remember his 2 HR game it wasn't that long ago or maybe when he was the best hitter on the team for almost two weeks still not that long ago. Let the kid develop and get off your high horse. B. the trade for Oswalt was a win there's really nothing else to say about that. C. Amaro admitted his mistake on the Lee deal and got him back...get over it. Also if you haven't noticed Aumont is turning it on and Ramirez looks like he's progressing nicely so they did get something back for Lee. This team has hands down the best rotation in the game 3 legit cy contenders and the best record in the league by far. Alright I'm off my soap box. Stay positive...Go Phil's!
