Cole Hamels struck out twice at the plate.

As far as smudges, that's about the extent of it. Hamels was brilliant on the mound today, and the result was the Phillies first playoff win in 15 years. The Phillies took advantage of a couple of Brewers fielding miscues to score three runs in the bottom of the third inning, then coasted to a 3-1 win.

In case you missed it, here are some key talking points for the dinner table tonight:

1) The Phillies' approach against young Brewers righthander Yovani Gallardo was obvious: Make him throw strikes. It's something this offense has struggled with this season. But for the most part, they were extremely disciplined today. Gallardo relied almost exclusively on his fastball and curve ball. He struggled to locate the latter, resulting in five walks in just four innings. Gallardo left the game after four innings and 75 pitches.

2) Hamels change-up was devastating tonight. Of the 24 outs he recorded tonight, 13 of them came on change-ups. The Brewers, unlike the Phillies, didn't make him work at all. He allowed just one runner to reach second base, and none to reach third. He was perfect through 4 2/3, walked just one, and allowed just two hits.

3) All three of the Phillies runs were unearned, thanks to a fielding error on Rickie Weeks in the third inning. Carlos Ruiz had led off the frame with a single. Hamels laid down a bunt to move him over, but Bill Hall's throw to first bouncced off the heel of Week's is glove, allowing both runners to reach safely. After Jimmy Rollins popped out to shallow left field and Jayson Werth struck out, Chase Utley hit a drive to center field that Mike Cameron couldn't handle. The play was ruled a double, which was probably the correct ruling. But if Cameron had gotten the proper jump rather than tracking to his right before running backwards, he probably would have caught the ball, which bounced in and out of his glove. Two runs scored on the play.

4) Shane Victorino looked at five pitches to draw a bases loaded walk and force the third and final run home in the third inning.

5) The Phillie Phanatic and his band of Merry-makers staged a parody of the famous Milwaukee sausage race, during which one of the hot dogs was knocked out with a big pink bat, and another was wrapped in a flying tackle by the Phanatic.

6) C.C Sabathia will square off against Brett Myers tomorrow night.

7) Hamels' final line: 8 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs, 0 earned runs, 1 walk, 9 strikeouts, 101 pitches.

8) The only time Hamels ever appeared to be in even an ounce of trouble was the sixth inning, when he allowed a one-out single to Craig Counsell and then a one-out walk to Mike Cameron to put men on first and second. But he rebounded to strike out Bill Hall, then got Ryan Braun to pop out to short stop to get out of the inning.

8) Brad Lidge made things interesting, allowing a run in the ninth. With the tying run on second base and one out he struck out Prince Fielder. Then, after walking J.J. Hardy, he threw a wild pitch to Corey Hart to move the tying run into scoring position. But he struck out Corey Hart on a 2-2 fastball to end the game.

9) Much more to come after the game.

I could care less about pedantry, but Col. Jessep ought to know how to use an apostrophe before the "s" in "speigs" to signify possession.

Bama, that was a save situation. The Phillies were leading 3-0 and each batter represented a run. It wasn't pretty but it was a save.

I find it absolutely hilarious that Mitch Williams couldn't watch Lidge in the ninth. Out of all the closers over the years Mitch has to be the single greatest cause of stomach ulcers in the Phila area over the last 50 yrs. They should probably name a disease after him.

After the Intentional walk to Howard they did the smart thing to limit the damage by pitching around Burrell and Victorino. A single from either would have added another 2 runs. Give credit to Pat and especially Shane for working the walks and forcing in another run. We just don't do these kind of things and it is good to see.

To justinnachod's pint, some saves are easier than others. Just like a pitcher who pitches 5 innings giving up 5 runs, but his team scores 10 runs, gets a win even if it wasn't his best effort. This was a probably a move to get Lidge some playoff confidence and reduce the amount of pitches for Hamels. Even though I don't think they will use him in game four either way.

I don't know why Charlie persists in batting Utley and Howard back to back. It makes it easy for the Brewers lefties to reduce them to non factors. Jason Werth had a great year but I believe he must sit against righties. He looked horrible yesterday.

forreal..listen to Michael J...the man has converted an incredible forty two saves in a row...a few more dating back to last year...until he shows otherwise you cant sit him in important situations because he may blow one at some point.

When Lidge blows a save in 2008, I think we can start criticizing him.

I am sick to my stomach hearing about Lidge. Like the absolutely miraculous win over Washington, he pitched badly. And today, he repeated that performance. Let's hope he gets it "together" because the last two outings have sucked. We need him to pitch "lights out", not giving up hit after hit, walk after walk and then FINALLY striking out the last two guys he faced!!

the tying run wasn't on only deck...it was also at the plate in the form of fielder. Then it was Hardy on second.

Bama, Lidge definitely earned a save today. Some save opportunities are easier than others; it's just the way the cookie crumbles.

I can buy them yanking Hamels to keep him fresh for Game 4. And I can buy that you need to show confidence in Lidge after his shaky Saturday. But I just can't get past the fact that Hamels was SLAUGHTERING the Brewers. It wasn't like he eked his way through eight. I just really don't understand why Manuel didn't leave in Hamels for the ninth until/unless he put somebody on base.

Not to mention speigs misuse of the homophone. It should be "You're an idiot."

I think Utley was out of position to take the cut off throw. If he's in position i.e doesn't slip, the run likely doesn't score as he was being held at third. For all his faults, Lidge did strike out the side in the ninth. That's what good closers do.

bama makes a completely valid point and speigs comes back with 4 words. i think youre the idiot speigs.

Meanwhile Ryan Dumpster is starting the curse early for the Cubs. Phillies-Dodgers in the NLCS, reminiscent of the 1970's. And, Bama why are you worrying about baseball stats during a playoff run?? Get a life.

This is exactly why I have a problem with the save rules. Lidge didn't pitch worth a darn but gets a save because all he's asked to do is get three outs before he gives up three runs. It shouldn't be a save unless the tying run is on deck. It just pads their statistics.

Re: Hamels getting pulled. I think that they wanted to keep his pitch count down in case they need him for game four (i.e. - they lose to CC tomorrow, then drop Saturday's game.) And asking Lidge to get three outs with a three run cushion, while it will cause a spike in your blood pressure, isn't asking too much. Just ask the Mets.

p.p.s. Race should be between a sausage (for Milwaukee), a hoagie, a Pork Italian, and a chessesteak.

P.S. The race should have been between the sausages and a cheeseteak.

Brad Lidge is turning into the Phillies 2008 version of the Phillies 1993 Mitch Williams. Are you getting the sick feeling in your stomach that Lidge is getting scarily close to blowing his first save of the season? I know it is going to be really scary if he goes into the ninth with a one run lead.

Go back and check what happened in the games earlier this season where Charlie to squeeze one more inning out of Hamels.

Couple of observations: First, our offense didn't really do a thing - the Brewers handed us our runs. Second, why the heck did Jolly Charlie pull Hamels. He was lights out and in total control and Lidge has been a heart-attack of late
